FENG SHUI Xceptions (That’s Exceptions)

Xception Number 1:
If you have even a basic knowledge of the Eight Mansions Formula of Feng Shui, you will know that each person has a Kua number based on their date of birth.  This also identifies whether you are an East Group or a West Group person.
East Group auspicious directions are North, East, Southeast and South.
West Group auspicious directions are Northeast, Southwest, West and Northwest.
What you may not be aware of is that each person is one of the 12 Chinese astrological animals based on their year of birth*.
Each of these 12 animals has a set 15o location around the compass.
For example the Rabbit occupies 82.6 – 97.5o in the East.  If you are a West group person based on your Kua number it appears that your astrological animal is against you.  This is not the case.  Under normal circumstances ‘facing’ the East would be inauspicious for you however sitting in the West and facing your astrological animal in the East is auspicious for you.  When in doubt your astrological animal takes precedent.
This can be applied whatever your Chinese animal and your Group.
*If you were born in January or the beginning of February your astrological animal will be the one applicable in the previous year.  This is based on the Chinese lunar Yin calendar together with the solar Yang calendar which begins on or around 4 February each year.  Go to our website to identify your animal sign based on your date of birth.
Xception Number 2:
Based on your Kua number it is auspicious to face any of your good directions.
However, if this represents you ‘facing’ what is known as the Grand Duke Jupiter (Tai Sui) in any given year, it becomes inauspicious for you.  Facing the Grand Duke who occupies 15 degrees around the compass will invite his wrath.  He will be happy to support you if you sit with your back to him but do not under any circumstances face him directly.  It will bring bad luck to you for the year.
Keep the area of the Grand Duke quiet and undisturbed for the year.
During 2012, the Year of the Water Dragon, the Grand Duke occupies the location of the Dragon (112.6 – 127.5o.)
Xception Number 3:
The most inauspicious location in any year is that occupied by the Five Yellow (or Wu Wang in Chinese.)  This affliction occupies 45o of the compass and in 2012 is in the Southeast.
It is important not to disturb the ground in the Southeast during 2012 to avoid upsetting the Grand Duke Jupiter and inviting the negative consequences associated with the Five Yellow.  The Five Yellow invites five types of bad luck and is the most inauspicious affliction of all.
Digging the ground occupied by the Five Yellow causes illness, cutting down trees can cause sickness, accident or a sudden and serious downturn in your business.  Any noise, excessive light, digging or renovation carried out in the area occupied by the Five Yellow causes serious misfortune.
Xception Number 4:
The final exception is the Three Killings or Sarm Saat in Chinese.  It occupies a massive 90o around the compass and during 2012 sits between 142.5º and 217.5º.
Just like in the area occupied by the Five Yellow the area housing the Three Killings should be kept quiet and undisturbed during the year.
It has been suggested that the Three Killings represent loss of wealth, loss of a loved one and loss of reputation.
Unlike the Grand Duke Jupiter it is better to face the Three Killings head on.  Sitting with your back to this inauspicious affliction can result in being symbolically ‘stabbed’ in the back.

Wealth and FENG SHUI

In the last blog on Vases we covered wealth in its widest sense however we will concentrate on wealth in the financial sense this time round.
The first thing to do when enhancing your home for wealth is to be aware of the different directions in your home using a standard compass.
In the Eight Aspirations Formula of Feng Shui the universal long term accumulated wealth direction is the Southeast, the area of Small Wood.  The universal direction for wealth acquired from your career, which is interpreted as an ongoing supply of money rather than an accumulation, is the North, the area of Water.
Both of these areas can be enhanced to invite wealth into your home.
The North benefits best from a constant flow of Water, such as a Water feature representing a waterfall.  It is important to ensure that any water flowing is coming into the home and not out.  Whether your water feature is an indoor one or an outdoor one the flow of water should be directed towards the home.  This is to ensure the money flows in and not out.
The Southeast benefits best from a body of Water.  Whether this is an outdoor pond or an indoor aquarium it represents accumulated wealth and as such should always be kept clean and well maintained.  If you have an indoor aquarium having at least eight gold fish and one black fish is auspicious.  Their movement keeps the water moving helping to avoid stagnation. Whether your water feature is indoors or outdoors if you have stagnant water (water that is not moving) it is representative of the wealth in your life, stagnant.
In the Eight Mansions Formula, a personalised formula of Feng Shui based on your date of birth you have a Kua number.  When this number is correctly identified it gives you four auspicious and four inauspicious directions around the compass.  Your overall auspicious direction is your Sheng Chi (overall good fortune, which includes wealth.)  Once you know the locations based on your personal Kua number you can enhance your Sheng Chi to invite wealth.  This may not be with water it will depend on the location of your most auspicious direction.
To maximise your auspicious and suppress your inauspicious directions it is necessary to know the Five Element Theory and its three cycles, the productive, the exhaustive and the destructive, to effectively capture positive Chi Energy and invite wealth into your life.
Below is a brief précis of enhancers for each of the four primary and four secondary points around the compass.
North – water as discussed above – metal coins – metallic wealth toad* with a coin in his mouth
Northeast/Southwest – crystal wealth ships** – faux diamonds – semi-precious gem tree – wish-fulfilling jewel
East/Southeast – water – jade or money plant – wooden wealth ship
South – jade or money plant – wooden wealth ship
West/Northwest – crystal or metal wealth ships – any crystals or semi-precious stones – metal coins – wealth toad
*Wealth toad should have his coin Yang side up.  You can display as many wealth toads as you wish in multiples of 3.  3, 6 and 9 are the most auspicious.  The toad likes to remain inconspicuous so is best placed low down under tables, chairs, anywhere where he is not too prominent.  Face at least one of the toads outward to invite money in; the rest can be facing inward.  You can have them appearing to come from the universal wealth direction of the southeast and each of your auspicious directions based on your personal Kua number.
**Wealth ships should be auspicious.  Displaying a war ship or a ship with cannons is inauspicious.  A trading ship such as the Cutty Sark which brought wealth with it is auspicious.

FENG SHUI Vases for Wealth and Love

You may wonder what vases have to do with Feng Shui never mind wealth and love.

Well first of all we are not talking about the glass vases bought to display your flowers.

The vases we are discussing are decorative vases with a particular shape designed to retain good fortune within them.  If you have been to a Chinese Restaurant you may well have seen these vases displayed.  They can be large and displayed on either side of the door or small and displayed prominently around the room.

These vases have a small round base and a bulbous body narrowing near the top.  The shape is significant as the bulbous centre allows for plenty of wealth to gather and the narrow opening prevents that wealth from escaping.

Oriental vases are generally decorated with auspicious symbols such as one of the celestial animals such as the dragon, the phoenix or the turtle.  They can also be decorated with flowers such as the peony or the lotus flower.

Wealth to the Chinese is not just about financial wealth it also signifies love, peace, family harmony and friendship.

With this in mind the vase can be filled with auspicious objects to signify the various areas of wealth important to the individual.  They can then be displayed in an area auspicious for the breadwinner of the family based on their Kua number, preferably their Sheng Chi (overall good fortune) direction.  These vases are decorative and not the same as the wealth vases described below.

Wealth vases’ for monetary wealth are slightly different from the decorative vases above in that they have a lid to contain all the ‘wealth’ inside.  Their basic shape is the same as the decorative vase and it has a narrow top and a lid.

To the Chinese the essential items placed in the wealth vase are:

A Wealth God – his direction within the vase should be noted to ensure he faces into the home and not out
Five gem globes signifying wealth from all directions (based on the Five Elements)
Crystals signifying wealth from the Earth
Faux gold bars – a universal symbol of wealth
Gold ingots – Chinese ancient symbols of wealth
Faux diamonds signifying the most precious of gemstones
Wish-fulfilling jewels which will help manifest your desires
3 Chinese brass coins tied with red string to signify current wealth (these are the coins with the square centre signifying ‘Heaven and Earth’ energy and having a Yang and Yin side)
9 Emperor Coins for long-term wealth
Semi-precious stones to invite the accumulation of your assets
A lock coin to protect your wealth
I-Ching coins to smooth the path to your desires
6 smooth crystal balls to invite family harmony
5 types of food to signify abundance (food such as rice grains as rice is the staple of Chinese food) – this is best placed deep in the vase
A Ru Yi which is the symbol of power

Additional items you may wish to add:

Soil from the home of a wealthy person (this has to be given to you it is inauspicious to take it without asking)
Cash given by a wealthy person (you can exchange a bank note with a wealthy person)
Pictures of wealthy individuals, homes, cars, clothes, jewellery – anything you aspire to own
Money in currencies from the major countries of the world

Put the lid on top and cover it with five different coloured materials (blue, green, red, ochre or yellow, white) based on the Five Elements and tie the material tightly with five different coloured strings.
Your wealth vase should not be openly displayed but should be hidden deep within a cupboard (ensuring the Wealth God is facing in towards the home.)

Universal FENG SHUI Tips

To effectively practice Feng Shui there is one universal skill it is essential to master.

This is a skill that transcends many of the different formulas of Feng Shui and it even has a major impact on Chinese Life Forecasting (Chinese Astrology.)

It is the Five Elements Theory and it works on the principle that all things in the universe belong to one of the five elements of water, wood, fire, earth and metal.  The interaction between these elements works in three cycles:  the productive cycle, the exhaustive cycle and the destructive cycle.

In the practice of Feng Shui prevention is always better than cure so by using the correct cycle in the Five Elements you can first block any external obstructions.  This will then allow you to effectively utilise the correct cycle/s inside your home to create balance and harmony.

There are many different Feng Shui formulas all of which focus on a different aspect of this fascinating and exciting living skill.

When starting out you may want to focus on one of the universal formulas, in effect a step-by-step guide.

The Eight Aspirations Formula identifies eight types of luck which, when captured and enhanced creates all the things required to make your life full of health, wealth and happiness.

The eight sectors are placed as follows:

Your first step is to decide on the sector/s important to you.  Not everyone has the same desires so when you know what you would like to attract you can enhance the relevant location to begin the attraction process.

Each of the above compass directions has a type of luck associated with it and to invite this luck into your life there are certain basic universal principles that can be used.

The first principle is to identify which one of the Five Elements belongs in the area along with its colour (see table.)  If you do nothing other than decorate the area in the appropriate colour you will begin the attraction process.

Next is to use the ‘element’ of the area to further improve your luck.   The list above is a starting point and the more you practice this skill the more attuned you will become to what is needed.
