FACING and SITTING

FACING and SITTING
Always remember the importance of the external environment in Feng Shui.  The area around a property accounts for something like 70% of the quality of energy (Qi) that enters and influences the internal.

One of the many systems of traditional Feng Shui is Eight Mansions and is one of the more straightforward to understand.  There are eight types of house in Eight Mansions and each one is named after the Sitting direction of a property.   Each sector around the Luo Shu Grid : North, South, West, East, Northwest, Northeast, Southeast and Southwest also represents a member of the family.  For example a LI house faces North and sits South.  LI relates to the middle daughter in a family; a QIAN house faces Southeast and sits Northwest.  QIAN relates to the head of the household, the father.

So what is the Facing and what is the Sitting direction of your property?  Easy huh?  The front is Facing and the back is Sitting - right?  Well, in theory - yes!  However many people wrongly assume that the direction the main door faces automatically represents the Facing direction.  In the past this may have pretty much always been the case however modern homes and housing developments tend to be a little more imaginative in their designs.  Main doors are located at the front, side, hidden in the corner next to the garage and so on...

So when determining the Facing direction of your property what do you look for?

You are seeking the direction of the most Yang energy; the direction of the best view from your window; the direction of a road or a river passing by your property.

What is the view you naturally gravitate towards?  You are probably going to find that is the right Facing direction for your home.

Facing is Yang, it is generally the place where the most activity is identified.  Sitting is Yin, it is the place of quiet and signifies protection for your property.

It is important to choose carefully because the Facing determines the Sitting direction and it is this Sitting direction that identifies the good and bad sectors of your property based on the Eight Mansions system of Feng Shui.  From this information it makes it easier to choose the location for the best areas of key rooms such as the kitchen, bedroom and home office (if appropriate).

SECONDARY COMPASS POINTS

SECONDARY COMPASS POINTS

Clockwise around the compass the four secondary points are Northeast, Southeast, Southwest and Northwest.

Unlike the primary compass points of North, East, South and West the secondary sectors are hugely influenced by the element of earth.

The Northeast and Southwest belong to the earth element and they are 'joined' by the centre which is also Earth element.  The Southeast belongs to the wood element and the Northwest is a metal element area.

The secondary sectors also contain a mix of elements, they do not have the pure Qi of the primary sectors.  As well as being an earth sector the Northeast also has water and metal influence; the wood sector of the Southeast also has some fire influence; the earth sector of the Southwest has fire and metal influence and the metal sector of the Northwest is also influenced by water.  How is this possible?  Welcome the Chinese Astrological Animals...they exert their influence wherever they appear.

First the earth element animals.  These are the Ox (Chou) in NE1; Dragon (Chen) in SE1; Goat (Wei) in SW1 and the Dog (Xu) in NW1.  These four are called the storage or graveyard animals and they each 'store' one of the remaining four elements.  Ox stores metal; Dragon stores water; Goat stores wood and the Dog stores fire.

Ok so that doesn't explain the metal influence in the Northeast and Southwest - where is metal mined? From the earth.  Continuing on...the Northeast is influenced by water because the Ox (Chou) is an animal of winter, known as winter earth, the transition period between winter and spring.  It signifies the final month of the winter season - the season of water dominance.  Southeast is influenced by fire because the Snake (Si) resides in SE3 and is the first of the animals of the summer months - hence fire.  The Southwest is influenced by fire because of the Goat (Wei).  Whilst it is referred to as 'summer earth' it is the third and final month of the summer season, hence the influence of fire.  The Northwest is influenced by water because the Pig (Hai) resides in NW3 and is related to the first month of the winter season when water is the dominating factor.

Oh boy, so much to take in.  Let's leave the elements for now and have a look at the numbers of the secondary directions.

Northeast has the number 8 White Star at its heart, the Southeast has the number 4 Green Star in residence, the Southwest has the number 2 Black Star at its heart and the Northwest has the number 6 White Star as its inherent influence.  These even numbers are yin.

The family members associated with these secondary direction are youngest son in the Northeast represented by the mountain and a time of waiting and preparation.  The eldest daughter of the family has a home in the Southeast and is represented by wind and movement.  In the Southwest the mother or eldest female of the family reigns supreme and she signifies stability and nurturing aspects of the earth.  The father or eldest male of the family is king in the Northwest represented by Heaven and leadership.

CARDINAL COMPASS POINTS

CARDINAL COMPASS POINTS

Clockwise around the compass the four cardinal points are North, East, South and West.

The Five Elements of Feng Shui are said to be 'all that is'.  These elements are Wood, Fire, Earth, Metal and Water.

The cardinal points of North (N2), South (S2), West (W2) and East (E2) contain only pure elemental Qi.  Water in the North, Wood in the East, Fire in the South and Metal in the West.

Are they all created the same?  The answer to that would be 'no'!

North contains water, South contains fire, West contains metal and East contains wood.  Notice anything significant?  These opposites also happen to represent the controlling cycle of the Five Elements, hence the water of the North controls the fire of the South and the metal of the West controls the wood of the East.  Oh that it were so simple!  Welcome Yin and Yang.

Yang water cannot control yang fire because yang fire is the sun, the source of our existence.  However, yin water, the water of mist, fog, clouds and so on can exert some control over the sun in as much as it can hide it from our view.

Yang metal, the hard and hewn metal turned into machinery and axes for example can certainly wield force and control over yang wood (wood of tall majestic trees of the forest) yet would find it hard to do anything more than bend and flatten yin wood.  This is the wood of grasses and ivy, wood that is more than capable of taking over anything it comes into contact with given time.

The four cardinal compass points also represent what is termed Peach Blossom (Tao Hua) Stars.  Each person has a specific Peach Blossom Star depending on their birth date.  Peach Blossom refers to how attractive, likeable, popular and approachable a person appears and is not the be all and end all when it comes to looking for love.

The Chinese Astrological Animals of the Peach Blossom Stars are the Rat (North), Rabbit (East), Horse (South) and Rooster (West).

The numbers associated with the cardinal directions are 1 in the North, 3 in the East, 9 in the South and 7 in the West, all odd numbers hence all yang.

In terms of the seasons North represents the dark days of winter, East belongs to the awakening season of spring.  South opposes the North and brings us to the light, bright days at the height of summer and West moves us gradually through the year into the cooler and changing days of autumn.

This is only a small part of the significance of the cardinal compass points.  Consider times of the day, member of the family, health, colour, shapes and much more.  These are also part of the rich tapestry of the compass points when working with Feng Shui...and we have yet to look at the remaining sectors or the element of earth.

ANNUAL AND MONTHLY CLASHING STARS!

ANNUAL AND MONTHLY CLASHING STARS!

What effect do the Annual and Monthly Flying Stars (numbers) have on each other when they meet in a Palace of the Luo Shu Grid?

Flying Stars Feng Shui sees these stars 'fly' between Palaces in 20-year,  Annual and Monthly cycles.  This flight even goes down to Day and Hour cycles however these are generally only used for very specific requirements.

The flight follows a set sequence as such:

Centre->North West->West->North East>South->North->South West->East->South East->Centre.

Remember South (9) is at the top centre and North (1) is at the bottom centre.

Each of these stars represent one of the Five Elements and how they interact will influence the Element of the sector which is identified by superimposing the Luo Shu Grid over a plan of your property.

Star 1 represents Water, Stars 2, 5 and 8 represent Earth, Stars 3 and 4 represent Wood, Stars 6 and 7 represent Metal.

Supposing Annual Star 1 moves into the East and the Monthly Star 2 pays a visit, what are the effects?

The East is a Wood location and when the Annual Water Star 1 enters it 'feeds' the Wood.  If Earth Star 2 enters as a Monthly Star we have some work to do.  Wood controls Earth in the Controlling Cycle of the Five Elements and Earth controls Water.  It is this combination we need to focus on.  An Earth and Water combination of Stars can produce muddy water which may influence the health of the residents of an East Palace.  However the time of year will have a bearing on how much of an issue this may be.

If this combination occurs during the Winter season Water and Wood are strong and Earth is hard therefore unable to exert its influence.

If this combination occurs during the Spring season Water becomes weak, Wood is strong and Earth is hard.  It is rather like a stalemate, one element will have difficulty influencing another.

If this combination occurs during the Summer season its all change.  Water cannot feed the Wood as it is trapped in Summer, Wood is weak and Earth will reign supreme.  This is one time when Water and Earth could combine causing potential illness for those in the East of a property.

If this combination occurs during the Autumn season Water again becomes strong and Earth becomes weak so illness could still result .  Wood will be ineffective against Earth.

It is always a combination of the innate Element of an area combined with the elements of the Annual and Monthly Stars that are considered before making any conclusions.

FENG SHUI AND WATER

FS8M
FENG SHUI AND WATER
Anyone who has heard anything about Feng Shui will be aware that Water plays an important role.  Indeed it has a vital part to play in creating balance and harmony in an environment.  It is this very role that has given rise to a misuse of the element in many instances.
 Feng Shui translates as Wind-Water.
"Qi is dispersed by the Wind and gathers at the boundaries of Water"
In Classical Feng Shui it is said that 'Mountains govern People (Health and Wellbeing) and Water governs Wealth'.
In certain contemporary Feng Shui methodology this is often taken out of context and Water is suggested in inappropriate locations in the name of attracting wealth. Does it work anyway?  Well, if you have tried it you can answer that one.
It is fundamental in Classical Feng Shui practice and vital that it is respected and used appropriately.  Water is generally regarded as Yang yet it does have its Yin and Yang attributes.  Yang Water is constantly flowing and in motion like the rivers and sea; Yin Water is fog, clouds and mist that are moist and almost ethereal in nature.
Most  generic recommendations suggest having a water feature (anything from an internal table top water fountain to an external swimming pool) in the North, the location relating to Water.  It is also suggested placing Water in the East and Southeast.  These Wood locations are then 'fed' by the Water.  While this is not incorrect there will be times when the needs of the residents and the time factor override these generalisations.
When the number 1 White Star whose home location is the North 'visits' another location recommendations sometimes suggest placing a Water feature in this area for the duration of the 'visit'.  Is this always a good idea?
Let us walk through an example from 2015 using the Monthly Flying Stars as an example.   In August 2015 the number 1 White Star will 'fly' to the West and remain there from August 8-September 7.  Would it be a good idea to place a Water feature here for the month?  In 2015 the West is the most inauspicious location of the year having both the 5 Yellow Earth Star and the 3 Killings present.  It is therefore recommended that the area be kept quiet and still for the year to avoid activating these negative combinations.  Placing a moving Water feature here would serve to activate the negative energy and stir up a host of potential hazards for residents.
Each of the eight primary and secondary locations are not created equal and Water is not suitable for all areas.  At any one period of time there are only four out of the eight locations that are generally appropriate for Water.  And to conclude the  example of the Monthly Flying Stars above, Water is not generally recommended in the West at any time during this Period 8 (2004-2023) and the following Period 9 (2024-2043).

BA GUA or LUO SHU GRID

BA GUA or LUO SHU GRID

What is the Luo-Shu Grid?  What is the BaGua? And how are they used in Feng Shui practice?

When looking to enhance your property using Feng Shui what do you think of first when looking at the floor plan of your property?

Do you superimpose the Luo-Shu Grid (3 x 3) or the BaGua (Pa Kua) over the floor plan?

What is the difference between these two grids synonymous with Feng Shui practice other than the obvious one of their shape?

If you follow Western Feng Shui (also known as BTB Feng Shui) the 3 x 3 Grid or BaGua is static with each of its sectors representing an 'aspiration' as well as colours, numbers, seasons and the five elements.  Beginning from the North the aspirations are: Career, Education, Longevity/Health, Wealth, Fame/Recognition, Love/Relationships, Descendants/Family and Mentor/Heaven Luck.

This Grid is always placed in the same position over a floor plan, with the middle sector at the bottom (career) in line with the front of your property.  No reference is made to compass directions or locations so each sector in a property is treated the same regardless of its direction and the location of each of the individual rooms within that property.  For example the 'Wealth' direction is always diagonally left of the front of the property.  This could relate to your living room, kitchen, bedroom or bathroom.  This style of Feng Shui is more static than its traditional counterpart in that regardless of the direction your property faces the internal sectors will all have the same attributes, with the front relating to career and so on.

This form of Western Feng Shui makes no provision for the influence of the external environment.

The BaGua as used in Classical Feng Shui refers to members of the family, numbers, colours, seasons, the five elements, body parts and much more.  The information contained in the BaGua is then superimposed onto the Luo-Shu Grid.  Unlike BTB Feng Shui however the grid is placed over a floor plan based on the compass direction of your property. Its position will therefore change between properties depending on certain factors.  No two properties, even those side by side will have the same quality of Qi.  This is what makes Classical Feng Shui a dynamic practice.

Classical Feng Shui teaches that the external macro environment will identify the presence and quality of Qi likely to enter your property.

So in general there are similarities between the Luo-Shu Grid and the BaGua as used in both Western and Classical Feng Shui.  The differences however are more pronounced when it comes to their use.

FENG SHUI FOR THE NEW YEAR

FENG SHUI FOR THE NEW YEAR

Moving from Winter into Spring, from one Chinese year to the next you may be thinking of creating a new look and feel to your home or office.  Painting, decorating or even changing some furniture can bring a new lease of life to your space.  It is part of the natural awakening after the Yin season of Winter into the Yang season of Spring.

Before making any changes it is worth taking a walk outside around your neighbourhood.

What are your neighbours doing?  Are there new home extensions, external work or even new properties being built in your area and what direction (using your property as the Tai Chi*) is this work being done?

*In this case the Tai Chi is the centre point of your search, it is the base from which to determine directions).

In Classical Feng Shui everything starts from the outside in so if there are changes in your external environment it may be affecting your property without you being aware of it.  Any impact could be positive or negative depending on the location and direction involved.

Armed with the directions of the 5 Yellow, 3 Killings, Grand Duke Jupiter and the Year Breaker of the current year you can see if any of these are being inadvertently activated and if they are, what the likely effect on your property might be.  Remember proximity though; if the work is not in direct line of sight to your building and it is located some distance away, the effect with be minimal at worst.

The closer the works the more impact it is likely to have.

Once you have established what is going on elsewhere you can then move on to your property.  Which rooms do you want to decorate?  Where are they located on your floor plan?  Using your floor plan as a starting point and knowing the locations of the annual afflictions you can easily cross out those areas that are best left undisturbed for the year.  Focus on those areas you can make changes and leave the rest for another time.

If you have essential work that must be carried out Date Selection is an important factor.  An auspicious date to begin chosen specifically for you can help avoid the pitfalls that may appear if the work goes ahead without any forethought.

PERIOD EIGHT AND THE YEAR OF THE YIN WOOD GOAT

PERIOD EIGHT AND THE YEAR OF THE YIN WOOD GOAT

When looking at the annual chart for 2015 it struck me that there is more to this year than initially meets the eye.

Remember Period 8?  From 2004-2023 we are in Period 8 of 9 20-year Periods. This 8 White Earth element Star is associated with wealth and has its home in the central palace of the Luo-Shu Grid for the entire 20-years.  It is worth remembering that it will have an influence on each Annual Chart.

On this 2015 Chart particularly it meets with the Annual Star numbers in the Centre, Northwest, East and Southeast Palaces to create He-Tu combinations.  What does this mean?  They create new elements that will have an impact on the Palace concerned.

Beginning in the Centre.  The 3-8 combination creates Wood.  The Annual 3 Jade Wood Star is related to disputes/disagreements/arguments making the centre of any property/area/country/or the earth prone to dispute.  The 3-8 combination will serve to strengthen the Wood element making disharmony more likely in the short term.

The Northwest has a 4-9 combination which creates Metal.  The Annual 4 Green Wood Star is related to learning and romance so while this is generally a usable Star it will be somewhat overwhelmed by its controlling element of Metal.  Metal is the intrinsic element of the Northwest.

The East has a 1-6 combination which creates Water.  The East is a positive location for 2015 with the 1 White Water Star of future prosperity.  The 1-6 combination will serve to strengthen the timely 1 Water Star while at the same time feeding the inherent Wood element of the East.  This should help the eldest son in a family thrive.

The Southeast has a 2-7 combination which creates Fire.  The Southeast has the 2 Earth Illness Star in place for the year and the 2-7 combination will serve to strengthen its effects as Fire creates Earth in the productive cycle of the Five Elements.  It will also weaken the intrinsic Wood element of the palace.  Care should therefore be taken to avoid this area if you are prone to ill-health.

During February all the Luo-Shu numbers return to their original home thereby doubling the effects of these combinations.  For example in the centre there is Period 8 combining first with the annual 3 and secondly with the monthly 3.

The combinations between Palace and Annual, Period and Annual as well as Annual and Monthly Charts are all different.  This is what makes the study of Feng Shui so fascinating and individual analyses so unique.

THE IMPORTANCE OF A GOOD DATE!

No, we are not talking about a romantic date or dinner date with friends more a positive date for:

a) making Feng Shui changes in your home or workplace
b) proposing marriage to that special someone
c) celebrating your Wedding day
d) breaking ground to build your dream home
e) moving home
f) signing a business contract

These is only a drop in the ocean compared to what date selection can be used for.  It is mainly for those events that will have a long-term effect on your life.  So why is it important to choose a particular date?  The simple answer is the quality of Qi present at a precise date and time will influence an event and people involved in the event.  To infuse the occasion, whatever it may be, with positive energy requires knowing when the energy is harmonious.

Qi (energy) is constantly in motion.  In Feng Shui we tend to focus on the annual and monthly changes of energy but in truth this also goes down to the day and the hour and it is this that we look to when choosing a date for a specific event.

You have all experienced days when everything you turn your hand to goes right or wrong or your mood changes from positive to negative (or vice versa) for no apparent reason.  This is the impact that Qi is having on you.  Often described as 'one of those days' the energy of the day is, or is not, in harmony with you.  Did you know that your birth date will influence whether a day is positive or not?

There are generic 'good' and 'bad' days and then there are those days that are good or bad for some and not for others.  When you are looking to arrange something that will impact your life for the foreseeable future it makes sense that you start on a day and at a time that will benefit you.  In 5 or 10 years time is it going to matter what the weather was like on your Wedding day or where you held that important business meeting?  It might matter more that things are not going well for you in your personal or business relationships and you cannot understand why.  Imagine that you went into partnership, whatever kind, on a day that benefitted one party and was a conflict day for another, or the day was a generic bad one - things will ultimately come to a head and disharmony will ensue.

Consider the benefits of date selection and how it can help you will ensure your adventure begins on the right footing, there is definitely more to gain than lose.

YEAR OF THE YIN WOOD SHEEP (or GOAT or RAM)

Move over Jia Wu (Yang Wood Horse) ----- Yi Wei (Yin Wood Sheep; Goat or Ram depending on your choice) is waiting!

To avoid confusion over when the energy of the year changes we have to look to the lunar and solar calendars.

The solar year starts this year on February 4 and it is the date we use when discussing the energetic changes for the year.   This date is also the first of the 24 Seasons of the solar calendar.  The 'Beginning of Spring' runs from February 4-February 18.  The second Season is known as 'Rain Water' and it runs from February 19-March 5.

The lunar year, commonly known as Chinese New Year, begins this year on February 19.  This is the start of the Year of the Yin Wood Goat and is increasingly celebrated in all parts of the world.

Energetically we look to February 4 to have our changes in place for the New Year.  This is especially important in 2015 when the Wu Wang-5 Yellow (generally regarded as the most inauspicious star of them all) moves from the Northwest (breathe a sigh of relief) into the West (beware).  It will occupy 45 degrees of the compass (247.5-292.5).

The West is the location of the Rooster (W2).  In the Ba Gua it represents Dui (the youngest daughter), Lake or Marsh,  it is Gua 7, the element of Xin (Yin Metal), season of Autumn, the mouth and voice.

The 5 Yellow brings with it the potential for five types of misfortune, all serious in their own right.  Illness, injury, major setbacks in your personal or business life, calamities and danger.

The potential for misfortune will only manifest if the West is disturbed by banging, decorating, renovating or digging.  Anything that will disturb the negative energy of the area and 'bring it to life'.  Keeping the area undisturbed, avoiding it if possible and adding more Metal objects will help ward off any negative influences.

So is it all bad news in the West?  Unfortunately, pretty much.  The only positive is the Duke Virtue Auxiliary Star in W1 which will help mitigate negative energies.

The West is also going to play host to the 3 Killings affliction in 2015.  This affliction (Robbery Sha, Calamity Sha and Annual Sha) will affect the compass locations of the Monkey (SW3), the Rooster (W2) and the Dog (NW1).

Does the bad news extend to the Monkey and Dog?  Not entirely.  In the location of the Monkey (SW3) there are two positive Auxiliary Stars.  The first is Yang Noble, which can stimulate the presence of helpful people.  The second is the Sun Star which can help reduce the effects of having inadvertently activated one of the annual afflictions.  This is a Yang Star which makes it more effective for males in reducing the effects of these issues.

In the location of the Dog (NW1) the Moon Star which being a Yin Star will benefit mainly females in situations when they have difficulty getting their message across or with their financial affairs.  This Star affects moods and emotions and may indicate problems with the opposite sex for males.

The Sun and the Moon Stars are two of the Four Nobles.

FOUR NOBLE ANNUAL STARS

FOUR NOBLE ANNUAL STARS
As we are moving closer to the Year of the Yin Wood Goat in 2015 it is time to take note of where the good and bad stars will be residing for the year.

In this post we will look at the stars known as the 'Four Nobles'.  These are the Sun Star, the Moon Star, the Dragon Virtue Star and the Fortune Virtue Star.  They each have their own unique energy and are used to counteract a specific negative issue.

From February 4 2015 to February 3 2016 the Four Nobles are situated in the following directions.

Sun Star (SW3), Moon Star (NW1), Dragon Virtue Star (NE3) and Fortune Virtue Star (SE1).

By activating one, or all of these stars, you can help alleviate difficulties occurring in your life.

So how do you activate?  The first thing is to identify your issue.  The second is to know which sector each star occupies during any particular year.  The third is to choose a good date and time (using Date Selection) and the fourth, the activation involves movement.  The movement of changing the furniture around,  clearing clutter from the area, knocking a nail in the wall in the direction of the star or opening a window all constitute activation.  The idea is that the movement activates the Qi and by extension the star.

One thing to remember is that you do not have to have any connection to the direction involved, ie. you do not have to be the Chinese astrological animal of the area.  If you have the issue associated with a particular star you can help alleviate the situation by activating the star.

Which star for which issue?  The Sun Star is a Yang star and will help males more than females.  When activated it will lessen the effects of having inadvertently activated one of the negative stars of the year such as the Five Yellow or the Three Killings.

The Moon Star is a Yin star and will help females more than males.  If your business or career depends on communicating with clients, customers, fellow workers or management and you have trouble getting your message across this is the star to activate.  As a Yin star it does affect feelings and emotions.

The Dragon Virtue Star is there to help when you have blockages or obstructions in your way.  These can be caused by difficult people who stop you from progressing in your working life and prevent you getting due recognition for your efforts.  It can help give a boost to your finances or your career path.  It can also be activated when you apply for a bank loan, to smooth the path and get a 'yes' response.

The Fortune Virtue Star is the star to activate to benefit from a more satisfying lifestyle in all areas.  Health, wealth and happiness can all be improved by activating this star.
