Feng Shui and the Lo-Shu Grid

There is much to discover about the nine numbers of Feng Shui synonymous with the original Lo-Shu Grid or the Magic Square as it is also known.  When Feng Shui was first conceived the Lo-Shu Grid numbers were placed in different locations around the grid.  For example the 2 and the 6 were placed south and north respectively.  This was known as the Early Heaven Arrangement or Yin Feng Shui and the grid was, and still is in some cases, primarily used to determine burial sites.  The ancient Chinese believed that ensuring an auspicious burial site would bring good fortune to future generations of the family.  The Early Heaven Arrangement is used in Flying Star Feng Shui, a Formula which deals with the dimension of time.

However the Lo-Shu Grid now more commonly used is known as the Later Heaven Arrangement or Yang Feng Shui; Feng Shui of the living.

As mentioned in an earlier post each line in the Lo-Shu Grid, straight or diagonal, adds up to 15 which is the number of days it takes for the moon to wax and then to wane.  The total of all the numbers adds up to 45 which when divided by 3 brings us back to 15. The 3 x 3 grid gives us the nine numbers of Feng Shui the odd numbers of which are Yang and the even numbers are Yin.

When the Yin/Yang symbol is superimposed over the Lo-Shu Grid we begin to see more of the balance and interaction of Yin and Yang.

Adding the numbers opposite each other excluding the centre number 5, both in a straight line and diagonally, on the above grid the total is always 10.  They also combine Yin and Yang.  For example 8, is located in a Yang area and its opposite number, 2, is located in a Yin area.

The number 8 is also a Yin number resulting in an element of Yang within the Yin.

10 is said to signify completion of a cycle and when we reduce this to a single number it begins a new cycle.  It also represents the basis of all computer code, the binary system.

The number 5 in the centre has an equal balance of Yin and Yang.

The Yin/Yang symbol is cyclical moving as it does from winter in the north (1) to late winter/early spring (8), spring (3), early summer (4), midsummer (9), early autumn (2), autumn (7), to late autumn/early winter (6.)

This clockwise cyclical movement also refers to the path of the sun from its lowest point during the night (1), early morning (8), sunrise (3), late morning (4), midday (9), afternoon (2), early evening (7), to late evening/early night (6.)

This creates yin (waxing) and yang (waning.)

The central number 5 is the Tai Chi (the centre) of the grid and it represents the heart of the home when it is superimposed over a house plan.  Add any of the other numbers to 5, reduce them to a single number where necessary and the Lo Shu grid is complete.  And it is this grid that forms the basis of the Eight Mansions (Eight Houses or Eight Palaces) Formula of Feng Shui; the personalised formula based on the birth date of an individual.

Feng Shui Inauspicious Numbers 5-7

There are two numbers left of the nine numbers in the Feng Shui Lo-Shu Grid and they are both stars to be very wary of.

Number Five (5) Yellow Star This is potentially the most dangerous of the inauspicious numbers and as it occupies 45o of the compass, knowing its location for the year is vital.  Its original home is the central grid, an extremely bad location for the family when it appears here because this area is also the heart of the home.

The five yellow is bad news for anyone running their own business and can bring serious consequences if it is not kept under control.  As an Earth star the best thing to exhaust this number is an all-metal six rod wind chime.  The sound of metal on metal will dissipate the negative energy being created.  In contrast sound and movement caused by banging, renovating, digging or major renovations will activate the worst of this star.

Fire (light) or the colour red will also strengthen its power as will the presence of crystals.  Wherever this inauspicious star resides in any year the area should be kept quiet and dimmed.

In 2012 its location is the wealth area of the Southeast.  This will have a negative effect on the fortunes of the Dragon and Snake born whose locations are also the Southeast.

The Eight Mansions Formula, also known as the Eight Palaces, in Feng Shui is a personalised Formula.  It is based on your lunar year of birth.  When anyone has the Kua number 5 this is changed to one of the other Earth numbers depending on whether they are male or female.  The male takes the number 8 Earth star of the Northeast and the female takes the number 2 Earth star of the Southwest.

Number Seven (7) Red Star The number seven red star was auspicious during period seven which ended in 2004.  Since then it has reverted to its deadly and dangerous nature.  As the star of the West it signifies robbery,  bloodshed and violence connected with the Metal element.

During 2012 this inauspicious number doubles in intensity as it has flown into the Northwest, also a Metal area.  Keep sharp Metal implements out of this location to safeguard the males of the family.   This is an area to avoid for the year if you are the breadwinner of the family; a father or grandfather.

The exhausting element of Metal is Water however whether you can use this remedy will depend on the location of the number seven.  A moving Water feature is vital in the Northwest to weaken the negative effects of this red star, which will seriously affect the fortunes of the male as well as the astrological animals; the Boar and the Dog.  While the Northwest is not the place for bright lights keeping this location well lit for the year will weaken the effects of this negative and dangerous star.   As an alternative to lights add red cushions or hang red curtains to weaken the number seven star using Yin Fire.  Keep the area of the number seven flying star quiet.  During 2012 remove wind chimes and media equipment from the area to avoid activating its malevolence.

Historically the number seven has been identified as a lucky number, a number of wisdom.  In ancient times the seventh son of the seventh son was said to be empowered with intuitive healing skills, making them excellent biomedical or research scientists, doctors and healers.  They were also said to be able to see into the future.

Seven more Sevens (7)
Pythagoras called 7 the perfect number with triangle (3) and the square (4)
Seven Chakra points in the body
Seven seas
Seven wonders of the Ancient World
Seven days of the week
Seven continents
Seven colours of the rainbow

Lucky, or unlucky? As in any Feng Shui Formula, prevention is better than cure.

Feng Shui Inauspicious Numbers

Now we have covered the Auspicious Star numbers in Feng Shui and their attributes, its time to turn our thoughts to those numbers to be wary of, numbers that bring bad luck and misfortune with them.  These are all concerned with the numbers of Flying Star Feng Shui and not individual Kua numbers.

Number Two (2) Black Star The number two is a balancing number.  It is yin and yang, female and male, odd and even, it is all about completion.  In Feng Shui it is an Earth number, its home location is the Southwest and it is the number relating to the female, the mother of the family; it signifies love and relationships, in all their many forms.  It is an auspicious star during period two Flying Star Feng Shui when it brings with it wealth and good fortune, especially for females.

At its darkest, the number two star brings with it illness, particularly concerned with the stomach or the womb.  This can affect all the family if the number two is the annual star located in the centre of the home, based on a Flying Star chart or if it ‘flies’ into the location of your front or your back door.  As an Earth number it is strengthened by the number nine Fire star of the South.  The best suppressant is the Metal element, that is yin (still) metal such as coins.

Number Three (3) Jade Star During the current period eight the number 3 Jade Star brings with it a tendency to malicious gossip and injuries to legs, hands, fingers and toes.  This is a wood star and its ‘home’ is the east which is the area of the eldest son of the family so when period three comes around the eldest son can maximise his good fortune and wealth by making full use of this star.

The Jade Star is known as the argumentative star and if it combines with the number two Black Star in a Flying Star Chart it has the effect of creating what is known as quarrelsome energy; a fierce energy that brings the worst out of both numbers.  In the Five Elements Wood destroys Earth and if this appears in either the centre, the facing (front door) or the sitting (back door) locations it will cause severe misfortune for businesses or homes with this combination.

Exhaust the number three star with Fire energy.  Lights or any yin fire elements will suppress the negative qualities of this difficult star.  If you are unable to use lights, red cushions, curtains or any image that has predominantly red tones will work as well.

In a positive light, the number three is the number of the trinity of Heaven, Earth and Mankind Luck; translating as Karma, Feng Shui and Personal Contribution to the luck of the life of every person.

The number 3 is the number of Saturn, multiplied by itself it reveals the number 9.  In its original sequence of numbers the Lo-Shu Grid of Feng Shui shows each line up, down and diagonal, adding up to 15.   The total of all nine numbers adds up to 45.  Divide 45 by the number of Saturn, 3, and the sum is 15, the number of days it takes for the moon to wax then wane.  3 is one of the main numbers associated with the Lo-Shu Square; the 3 x 3 grid used to analyse many of the secrets of Time Dimension or Flying Star Feng Shui.  This square is an important ingredient to revealing the changes in energy over different time periods.

Feng Shui Auspicious Numbers 4-9

As well as the auspicious White Stars 1, 6 and 8 there are two further Stars we can mention for their positive benefits.

Number Four (4) Green Star This star is generally positively associated with learning, literary activities, writing skills and academic success.  These positive connotations are constant although the strength of their effect varies with the Flying Star period.  Being in period eight of Flying Star Feng Shui the number four star is said to be dead.  What this generally means is that because we are a long way from period four in the Flying Stars this Green Star has no power or potency; rather than ‘dead’ a better description might be that it is dormant; hibernating ready to awaken when the time is right.  On its own it can create mental stress to manifest in individuals during this dormant period.  It will not be necessary to wait until period four comes around again before being able maximise its beneficial associations.  The next time the number four will come alive in Flying Star Feng Shui is when period one takes centre stage during the 20-year period of 2044-2064.

Whatever period we are in when the number 4 Green Star combines with the number 1 White Star it is revitalised by this auspicious Water Star which serves to activate all its positive literary and academic benefits.  The reason for this is that the number 4 is a Wood star and its location is the southeast, the compass area of Small Wood.  The number 1 star is a Water star and in the productive cycle of the Five Elements – Water ‘feeds’ Wood – hence when these two flying stars combine they unleash the positive benefits of the Green Wood Star.  A word of warning however, too much water can bring with it scandals relating to personal relationships.  However to finish on a positive note during period eight when the annual Flying Star chart brings the 1 and 4 combination it brings fame for those people associated with writing and the media.

Number Nine (9) Purple Star During the current period eight the number 9 Purple Star is a ‘star in waiting.’  It is waiting to take over the mantle of the 20-year period from 2024-2044.  The number nine star is a future prosperity star that expands and multiplies whichever other star it combines with – this can be good or bad depending on the star it partners.  When combined with auspicious stars it enhances fame and recognition, success and the fulfilment of desires.  When combined with inauspicious stars it invites arguments, fire and sickness of the heart and problems with the eyes.

Much like the number eight star, the number nine star is a perennial favourite.  It is a number that will always return to ‘self.’  However you add, multiply or divide the number 9 it will always return to 9 when the total is reduced to single figures, therefore it can never be corrupted. As an example: 9x9=81; 81x9=729; 7+2+9=18; 1+8=9.  Try it, it really does work.

When certain numbers combine and create what is known as the ‘Sum of Ten’ it is an extremely auspicious indication.  For example, when the number 1 Water Star combines with the number 9 Fire Star in Flying Star Feng Shui this indication comes to life.  On the face of it Fire and Water are directly opposite on the compass and the water destroys fire in the destructive cycle of the Five Elements however on this occasion it brings a balance of Yin and Yang and will ultimately invite family harmony.  There may be outbursts of anger caused by the fire element of the number nine star, but these will be short-lived.

There is a further combination that, when they combine, they bring long-lasting wealth.  This combination is the two stars we are discussing here the 4 and the 9.  The number 4 Wood star which lives in the long-term wealth area of the southeast, feeds the number 9 Fire star of the south in the productive cycle of the Five Elements to activate its power to magnify whatever it comes into contact with.  Therefore when the Flying Star of the period or of the year indicates this combination keep the area auspicious to activate the combined power of these stars.
