SECONDARY COMPASS POINTS

Clockwise around the compass the four secondary points are Northeast, Southeast, Southwest and Northwest.

Unlike the primary compass points of North, East, South and West the secondary sectors are hugely influenced by the element of earth. 

The Northeast and Southwest belong to the earth element and they are 'joined' by the centre which is also Earth element.  The Southeast belongs to the wood element and the Northwest is a metal element area.

The secondary sectors also contain a mix of elements, they do not have the pure Qi of the primary sectors.  As well as being an earth sector the Northeast also has water and metal influence; the wood sector of the Southeast also has some fire influence; the earth sector of the Southwest has fire and metal influence and the metal sector of the Northwest is also influenced by water.  How is this possible?  Welcome the Chinese Astrological Animals...they exert their influence wherever they appear.

First the earth element animals.  These are the Ox (Chou) in NE1; Dragon (Chen) in SE1; Goat (Wei) in SW1 and the Dog (Xu) in NW1.  These four are called the storage or graveyard animals and they each 'store' one of the remaining four elements.  Ox stores metal; Dragon stores water; Goat stores wood and the Dog stores fire.  

Ok so that doesn't explain the metal influence in the Northeast and Southwest - where is metal mined? From the earth.  Continuing on...the Northeast is influenced by water because the Ox (Chou) is an animal of winter, known as winter earth, the transition period between winter and spring.  It signifies the final month of the winter season - the season of water dominance.  Southeast is influenced by fire because the Snake (Si) resides in SE3 and is the first of the animals of the summer months - hence fire.  The Southwest is influenced by fire because of the Goat (Wei).  Whilst it is referred to as 'summer earth' it is the third and final month of the summer season, hence the influence of fire.  The Northwest is influenced by water because the Pig (Hai) resides in NW3 and is related to the first month of the winter season when water is the dominating factor. 

Oh boy, so much to take in.  Let's leave the elements for now and have a look at the numbers of the secondary directions.  

Northeast has the number 8 White Star at its heart, the Southeast has the number 4 Green Star in residence, the Southwest has the number 2 Black Star at its heart and the Northwest has the number 6 White Star as its inherent influence.  These even numbers are yin.

The family members associated with these secondary direction are youngest son in the Northeast represented by the mountain and a time of waiting and preparation.  The eldest daughter of the family has a home in the Southeast and is represented by wind and movement.  In the Southwest the mother or eldest female of the family reigns supreme and she signifies stability and nurturing aspects of the earth.  The father or eldest male of the family is king in the Northwest represented by Heaven and leadership.

YEAR OF THE YIN WOOD SHEEP (or GOAT or RAM)

Move over Jia Wu (Yang Wood Horse) ----- Yi Wei (Yin Wood Sheep; Goat or Ram depending on your choice) is waiting! 

To avoid confusion over when the energy of the year changes we have to look to the lunar and solar calendars. 

The solar year starts this year on February 4 and it is the date we use when discussing the energetic changes for the year.   This date is also the first of the 24 Seasons of the solar calendar.  The 'Beginning of Spring' runs from February 4-February 18.  The second Season is known as 'Rain Water' and it runs from February 19-March 5.

The lunar year, commonly known as Chinese New Year, begins this year on February 19.  This is the start of the Year of the Yin Wood Goat and is increasingly celebrated in all parts of the world.

Energetically we look to February 4 to have our changes in place for the New Year.  This is especially important in 2015 when the Wu Wang-5 Yellow (generally regarded as the most inauspicious star of them all) moves from the Northwest (breathe a sigh of relief) into the West (beware).  It will occupy 45 degrees of the compass (247.5-292.5). 

The West is the location of the Rooster (W2).  In the Ba Gua it represents Dui (the youngest daughter), Lake or Marsh,  it is Gua 7, the element of Xin (Yin Metal), season of Autumn, the mouth and voice.

The 5 Yellow brings with it the potential for five types of misfortune, all serious in their own right.  Illness, injury, major setbacks in your personal or business life, calamities and danger.

The potential for misfortune will only manifest if the West is disturbed by banging, decorating, renovating or digging.  Anything that will disturb the negative energy of the area and 'bring it to life'.  Keeping the area undisturbed, avoiding it if possible and adding more Metal objects will help ward off any negative influences.

So is it all bad news in the West?  Unfortunately, pretty much.  The only positive is the Duke Virtue Auxiliary Star in W1 which will help mitigate negative energies.

The West is also going to play host to the 3 Killings affliction in 2015.  This affliction (Robbery Sha, Calamity Sha and Annual Sha) will affect the compass locations of the Monkey (SW3), the Rooster (W2) and the Dog (NW1).

Does the bad news extend to the Monkey and Dog?  Not entirely.  In the location of the Monkey (SW3) there are two positive Auxiliary Stars.  The first is Yang Noble, which can stimulate the presence of helpful people.  The second is the Sun Star which can help reduce the effects of having inadvertently activated one of the annual afflictions.  This is a Yang Star which makes it more effective for males in reducing the effects of these issues.

In the location of the Dog (NW1) the Moon Star which being a Yin Star will benefit mainly females in situations when they have difficulty getting their message across or with their financial affairs.  This Star affects moods and emotions and may indicate problems with the opposite sex for males.

The Sun and the Moon Stars are two of the Four Nobles.

Feng Shui Inauspicious Numbers 5-7

There are two numbers left of the nine numbers in the Feng Shui Lo-Shu Grid and they are both stars to be very wary of.

Number Five (5) Yellow Star This is potentially the most dangerous of the inauspicious numbers and as it occupies 45^o of the compass, knowing its location for the year is vital.  Its original home is the central grid, an extremely bad location for the family when it appears here because this area is also the heart of the home.

  

The five yellow is bad news for anyone running their own business and can bring serious consequences if it is not kept under control.  As an Earth star the best thing to exhaust this number is an all-metal six rod wind chime.  The sound of metal on metal will dissipate the negative energy being created.  In contrast sound and movement caused by banging, renovating, digging or major renovations will activate the worst of this star.

  

Fire (light) or the colour red will also strengthen its power as will the presence of crystals.  Wherever this inauspicious star resides in any year the area should be kept quiet and dimmed.

In 2012 its location is the wealth area of the Southeast.  This will have a negative effect on the fortunes of the Dragon and Snake born whose locations are also the Southeast.

The Eight Mansions Formula, also known as the Eight Palaces, in Feng Shui is a personalised Formula.  It is based on your lunar year of birth.  When anyone has the Kua number 5 this is changed to one of the other Earth numbers depending on whether they are male or female.  The male takes the number 8 Earth star of the Northeast and the female takes the number 2 Earth star of the Southwest. 

Number Seven (7) Red Star The number seven red star was auspicious during period seven which ended in 2004.  Since then it has reverted to its deadly and dangerous nature.  As the star of the West it signifies robbery,  bloodshed and violence connected with the Metal element. 

During 2012 this inauspicious number doubles in intensity as it has flown into the Northwest, also a Metal area.  Keep sharp Metal implements out of this location to safeguard the males of the family.   This is an area to avoid for the year if you are the breadwinner of the family; a father or grandfather.

  

The exhausting element of Metal is Water however whether you can use this remedy will depend on the location of the number seven.  A moving Water feature is vital in the Northwest to weaken the negative effects of this red star, which will seriously affect the fortunes of the male as well as the astrological animals; the Boar and the Dog.  While the Northwest is not the place for bright lights keeping this location well lit for the year will weaken the effects of this negative and dangerous star.   As an alternative to lights add red cushions or hang red curtains to weaken the number seven star using Yin Fire.  Keep the area of the number seven flying star quiet.  During 2012 remove wind chimes and media equipment from the area to avoid activating its malevolence.

Historically the number seven has been identified as a lucky number, a number of wisdom.  In ancient times the seventh son of the seventh son was said to be empowered with intuitive healing skills, making them excellent biomedical or research scientists, doctors and healers.  They were also said to be able to see into the future.
