FENG SHUI and BEDROOM LOCATION

In Feng Shui your bedroom is one of the three most important areas, together with the main door and kitchen.
It is a place of rest and recuperation where you go to refresh your body, mind and spirit.  There is no doubting you are at your most vulnerable when you sleep so your bedroom has to reflect a sense of peace and tranquility, of safety.
In Personal Eight Mansions Feng Shui each person has four positive and four negative directions.  In Eight Mansions for the Home there are four positive and four negative locations.  If you are able to match the two and personally benefit from the location of your master bedroom and your place within it you have made a good start in creating your personal sanctuary.
Ideally this Yin room will be situated in an auspicious location for you.  Whether you belong to East or West Group the best location would be your Yan Nian.  Covering longevity and relationships this area would help consolidate the bond with your loved one.  Having the bed head positioned to 'face*' your Tian Yi location will give you the best of both worlds. Tian Yi means Heavenly Doctor so having your bed here will aid your rest and help maintain your good health.
*'face' indicates the direction the top of the head points when lying down.
When you and your partner belong to different Groups you have to make a call and decide whose Yan Nian location to go with.  In this situation one solution is to locate your bedroom in the Yan Nian location for one and position the bed head in the Tian Yi location of the other.
Alternatively having the bedroom in an auspicious location for one of you and the main door in an auspicious direction for the other will enable both of you to benefit from positive energies.
Another consideration with your bedroom can be the Natal Chart of your home based on Flying Stars.  Having the 1/4 combination (among other things known as a combination of romance) as the Facing (Water) and Sitting (Mountain) stars in your bedroom and being able to activate them correctly will create harmony and promote your relationship.
Unless you are having a Feng Shui audit on your home it is better to use either Eight Mansions or Flying Stars and not attempt to combine the two.

FENG SHUI INSIDE

"An Englishman's home is his castle"
HENRY VIII and SIR EDWARD COKE

While we may not all live in castles with a moat and drawbridge the one thing we desire when we close our door is to feel safe, comfortable and 'at home.'

The main door, the Qi mouth of our home, will beckon in either Sheng Qi (prosperous Qi) or Sha Qi (killing Qi) when it is opened.  What is outside your main door?  What is the quality of Qi coming into your home?

A positive flow of Qi is essential for harmony in the home.  Is your hall, kitchen, bedroom and home office or study benefitting from Sheng Qi?

After the main door these are the most important areas to focus on.  Does the layout of your home allow a meandering flow of energy to make its way into these vital locations?

They all benefit from being in a good location to suit the occupants.  They all benefit from having natural light*.

The hall is the first port of call for any Qi entering your home.  If it has a space to gather before it begins its journey through the rest of your property it becomes slow and meandering rather than fast moving.  Harmonious flow both downstairs and upstairs brings peace and comfort.

As important as the kitchen is, it is better in a negative area based on the natal chart of your home rather than a positive area.  However it should also have no harmful features pointing at it from the outside.  One of its main purposes is to care for the wellbeing of the residents.  Place the cooker in an auspicious direction and location within the room and at the same time see whether it is well supported from the outside.  The kitchen is a Yin area with essential Yang elements to benefit the health of the family.  Having a negative feature pointing directly into the kitchen, such as a single tall tree or a lamppost will potentially have an adverse effect on the health of the residents.

*The bedroom, a Yin location, should be light but not too bright otherwise it becomes Yang and not conducive to restful sleep.  This is another area concerned with health and wellbeing.  It is also a sanctuary where the body is rejuvenated through the night.  What is outside your bedroom window?  Like the kitchen it should not have any negative features.

More and more people are working for themselves, or working from home for a company or corporation.  So having a home office in a good location based on the natal chart of the home and the individual using the room is essential.  Unlike the kitchen and bedroom this is a Yang area concerned with opportunities in career and the flow of wealth.

Positive Qi flow when directed in the right way can ensure your home really is your castle.

Feng Shui Home - Staircase Decor and Colour

In the modern practice of symbolic Feng Shui decor and colour are used extensively.  While traditional Feng Shui does not encompass these aspects of the practice, the way we decorate our homes and the colours we use are a reflection of our personalities and their effects will have an energetic influence on us and the way we live.  We will either feel good about it or uncomfortable with our choice.

The staircase is a carrier of the Qi that enters your home.  When it is auspicious you want to maximise this and enhance the quality of Qi moving up the stairs.  If there is nothing to slow it down such as when your staircase directly faces the front door,  it will move too quickly carrying Sha Qi to your upper floors.  The route upstairs is usually into your inner sanctuary; your bedroom, one of the most important rooms in Feng Shui terms.  As the room you go to, to refresh your mind, body and spirit having auspicious and meandering Qi entering will make you feel safe and secure, relaxed and ready to refresh your senses.  This is why it is better if your bedroom door does not directly face the top of the stairs, especially when you have a straight staircase.

How you feel about the route this energetic journey takes and the quality of Qi will be determined by the staircase, its location in relation to your main door, and your attitude towards it.  Displaying photographs of your loved ones, your family or your friends on the walls will give you a sense of belonging and love every time you use the staircase.

Objects, paintings, pictures and lights placed at the bottom and along the walls up the staircase will all help slow down the movement of Qi.

To carry Sheng Qi to the upper floors the use of lights and colour on the walls, such as peach, pink or yellow will create a sense of warmth and a welcoming backdrop for family photographs.

Good lighting is essential on your staircase, especially if it is in a dark location or it is narrower than normal.  A wide comfortable staircase is more auspicious for you and your family and also for the Qi.  If you feel constricted when climbing the stairs, so will the energy.  Mirrors, lights, wall covering and colour, pictures of wide open spaces will all help open up a narrow space.

Colour will play its part in bringing balance.  Earth colours will help create stability on your staircase, useful if you have an overly wide set of stairs.  The paler fire colours of pink and peach will bring warmth to a dark staircase.  Green will give a sense of the natural world and of growth, particularly important if you have a young family.  White or off-white will open up a restricted space but will benefit from lighting to ground and control this most yang of colours.

Feng Shui Home - Home Staircase

Staircase - Going Up-Going Down!

Unless you live in a single-storey property you will have at least one staircase in your home.

This time around we are not talking about external stairways but those that transport Qi between the ground and first floor of your interior living space.  You may have your living area on the ground floor which is the more usual situation, or you may have your sleeping area on the ground floor with your living space on the first floor.  Whichever layout you have will be influenced by the location of your staircase.  The quality of the Qi you experience will depend on the layout of your home.

What is it you see when you open your front door from the outside looking in?  Do you have an open space allowing the Qi to enter; gather and spread slowly and harmoniously throughout the space?  Do you have a long straight hall forcing the Qi to move straight forward quickly and aggressively, rather like a poison arrow?

Or do you have a staircase?  And does it go up or down?  Is your staircase in full view of your main door?  Is your staircase straight, curved, split or spiral?  How does this affect the flow of Qi in your home?

A staircase going down indicates difficulties for the occupants.  Eventually you may have to leave the house or you may experience blocks to accumulating wealth.  Like water that flows downwards, Qi will flow down away from your living area.  Water represents wealth in Feng Shui so a downward staircase represents positive Qi flowing away from the main living spaces.

There are a lot of questions to consider and their answer will depend greatly on the quality of Qi you experience in both the lower and upper levels of your home.

Ideally, your staircase is located away from your main door, to one side or the other.  Ideally you will have an open space inside your front door which will allow the Qi entering to accumulate and move harmoniously through your ground floor as well as up the staircase and into the upper level/s of your home.

Knowing that Qi moves appropriate to its surroundings, if you have a staircase directly in front of your main door where is the Qi destined to go?  Up the staircase!  This will impact on the Qi in your lower and upper floors.

If your staircase is in front of your main door the Qi will enter through the door and immediately head up the stairs.  This means your ground floor will be lacking positive Yang Qi and may have a build up of negative Yin Qi, especially if the house is empty during the daytime.  If this coincides with a straight staircase the Qi heading upwards will be fast and aggressive when there is nothing to slow it down.  If you have a door, such as your bedroom door; your sanctuary; directly facing the top of this straight staircase the Qi entering your place of peace and rest, will be fast and aggressive; not conducive to serenity and tranquility.

Next time we will look at different types of staircase in the home and their influence on the movement of Qi.

FENG SHUI and EIGHT MANSIONS-East Group

“If we are facing in the right direction, all we have to do is keep on walking”
Buddhist Saying

Personal Eight Mansions is well-known in Feng Shui.  Your date of birth identifies your Gua number which in turn identifies your four good and four bad locations.

Knowing the Eight Mansions of your home, which takes into consideration the distribution of energy throughout the building will determine whether you and your home are meant for one another.

Looking at an example of a person with Gua number 1; your personal east group locations and directions and how you can live in a home inauspicious for you based on its sitting direction.

Gua number 1 auspicious directions are southeast, east, south and north; the inauspicious directions are west, northeast, northwest and southwest.  Looking at the worst scenario of your house you would be living in a Kun House (facing northeast/sitting southwest.)  In effect your house is sitting in your total loss location.  Before you run away screaming let’s take a more in-depth look at the situation.

Remembering that location is more important than direction, the first thing to do is consider the internal layout of your home.  Can you arrange it such that you --- a) Have your living area in the southeast (your best direction); b) Have your bedroom in the east (your health direction); c) Place your kitchen in the southwest (your total loss direction)?

This allows you the luxury of choosing which of your four auspicious directions you face when sitting, playing and sleeping, which will in turn bring harmony and positive energy into your life.  Having your kitchen in the southwest will press down on your bad luck (total loss) associated with the southwest.  It is important to remember to have the stove facing one of your auspicious directions, depending on the aspiration important to you at this particular time in your life.  If bad health is an issue for you then having the stove facing* your tien yi (doctor from heaven) or nien yen (longevity) directions will benefit you.  *The facing direction of the stove means the direction the knobs are pointing.)

Another thing to consider is the direction your living room door (unless you have an open plan layout in which case it will mean the direction the entire space is facing), and your bedroom door, face.  It is beneficial if they face one of your auspicious directions.  This is inviting positive Qi into the space each time the door is opened and closed.

So although you may live in a house that is not in harmony with you and your personal directions you can see it is still possible to arrange the internal space such that it beneficial for you.

Looking briefly at Chinese Astrology, if you are born in the year of the Sheep (SW1) or the year of the Monkey (SW3) you will gain some benefit from the Southwest regardless of your Kua number.  Just be aware of the annual afflictions for each year and take suitable measures to avoid misfortune when it comes calling, in your animal location.

Feng Shui and Missing Corners-Children

The Eight Aspirations of Feng Shui are Career (north), Education and Study (northeast), Health and Longevity (east), Wealth (southeast), Fame and Recognition (south), Love and Relationships (southwest), Family (west) and Heaven and Mentor (northwest.)

When a location (corner) relating to an aspiration important to you is missing in the Big Tai Chi of your property the first thing to establish is whether this same location is missing in the Small Tai Chi of your living space.  When the locations are missing in both the Big and the Small Tai Chi it will prove difficult for you to achieve your desires.

During their early life your children require only to feel loved and safe.  Keeping them healthy; and having good luck in their studies will cause difficulties for them if there is a missing corner in either the northeast (education and study luck) or in the east (health and longevity.)

Northeast and East
The northeast is the area in the eight aspirations concerned with education and study luck.  Having your child sitting in this location when studying will help them concentrate.  They can either face the northeast when sitting doing their homework or sit in the northeast facing their Fu Wei (personal growth) direction based on their Kua number.

The northeast may also benefit from the addition of lights and a fun way of bringing these into the space for your child is with lava or glitter lamps.  These are introducing two of the three Feng Shui enhancing elements of light and movement.

In the eight aspirations the east of your home is the location connected to health and longevity.  It relates to Yang Wood, tall and straight trees.  It represents growth Qi, a vital component for your child’s healthy development.  Displaying the symbolic image of the mighty Dragon synonymous with the yang energy of the male offspring will bring positive benefits for your child as well as all other members of the family.  The east is the location of the eldest son of the family and it could be advantageous to have his bedroom located in this area if possible.

If your child’s bedroom also serves as their study room it is more beneficial if the two areas can be divided in some way, such as with a chest of drawers or a screen.  The bedroom is predominantly a place of rest and even though children should have more yang than yin elements in their bedroom being constantly reminded of their studies will not necessarily attract the right Qi for rest and rejuvenation.

FENG SHUI and MISSING CORNERS

Depending on your desired aspiration, the rooms you can activate will vary.

For example, if you have school or college age children you can activate either the northeast corner of the living room or the northeast corner of your child’s bedroom to attract positive expectations for their learning and study.

When health and longevity are important to you either the east of your living, dining or bedroom can be activated.

Fame and recognition are best activated in the living room.

North, South and Southwest
If you aspire to success in your chosen career the areas to concentrate on are the career area of the north, the fame and recognition area of the south and the relationship area of the southwest.

When the north of your home is missing it will impact on the day-to-day success you achieve in your working life.  This makes it important to be able to activate the Small Tai Chi of your living space.  The element associated with the north is water and a water feature with an inward flow of water displayed in the living room will activate the area.  You can also paint the area blue or white (the white of metal will enhance the north based on the productive cycle of the Five Elements.)

The area of fame and recognition is important to activate for career success as without recognition in your working life you are unlikely to attract the attention of your superiors and promotion may well pass you by.  When you run your own business this area is particularly important to get your name, and your Company’s name known to your chosen market.  Decorate and enhance the south of your living room with the red of the area or the enhancing colour of green which belongs to the wood element (wood enhances fire.)  Red is a vibrant colour which can become ‘dangerous’ if used to excess, so be sure it is not overwhelming and symbolically ‘burning’ your aspiration.  Lights belong to the fire element and can be used as an alternative to the colour red.

The southwest is the relationship area.  In your career it is important to cultivate positive relationships with your colleagues and superiors otherwise your career may stagnate and go nowhere and you will be unhappy in your working life.  Enhancing the living area with the fire colours of the south, with lights, as well as smooth round natural crystals will bring definite benefits in all your relationships.

FENG SHUI and Rooms

The rooms and their placement in the overall layout of your home will play a large part in determining the quality of the Chi Energy created.

In the practice of Feng Shui the following are preferred locations for your main rooms:

  • Your living room is considered the social area in your home and is best located near the front

This is your entertainment area and is the place where family and friends gather to socialise, making its location the public area of your home.  It is one of the areas that will benefit from lots of Yang energy to make it a lively, vibrant and welcoming room.

Remember that balance is all important so some elements of Yin are required to avoid making it an unsettling place to spend time.  The occupants will create their own Yang energy which will contribute to the overall feel of the room.

  • Your dining room is known as the heart of the home and benefits from being in or near the centre

The dining room is a family area and if it is in or near the centre of your home and is used often it has the effect of keeping the family united – as the saying goes “the family who eats together, stays together.”

If it is not possible to house your dining room in the centre it is better to have it towards the back of the home.  To the Chinese an abundance of food is wealth so keeping the table away from the front of the house will ensure the wealth is kept in the home.

Lifestyles today tend to prevent families from eating together on a regular basis however for the well-being of the family as a whole it is important to eat together at least once a week to maintain a happy and healthy family life.

  • Your kitchen is best towards the back of your home

It also benefits the parents if it is located in one of their inauspicious locations based on their Kua number.  This is particularly important for the breadwinner of the family to ensure their good fortune is not lost.

Having the source of the energy from the cooker or stove coming from an auspicious direction for the breadwinner will invite positive Chi.

  • Your master bedroom is best if it is not above the kitchen, the garage or a bathroom
Above the kitchen (and more particularly over a cooker or oven) this has the effect of ‘burning’ any good fortune; above a garage,  particularly one that is either rarely used or houses boxes and junk rather than the family car/s, signifies a lack of support for a sleeping couple;  above a bathroom sends negative energies to the bedroom.

It is also important to have more Yin than Yang in the bedroom to ensure you can rest.  Working, exercising or watching television in the bedroom before sleep creates too much Yang energy and as a result makes it difficult to rest and refresh the body, mind and spirit ready for another day.

Next time – S-Southwest
