NEGATIVE FEATURES IN AND AROUND THE HOME

What are negative features and how will they affect your Feng Shui?

Negative features in a natural environment are likely to be mountains too close to a property, a rocky outcrop seemingly suppressing a home or stagnant water sending Sha Qi your way. In an urban setting the negative feature is more likely to be (but not exclusively) man made.  Flyovers, raised railway lines, pylons, microwave towers are all a part of our 21st century life and in the wrong place can affect us in a damaging way, both energetically and healthwise.

Outside

As with all Feng Shui checking out what might be affecting the quality of Qi outside your property and in particular what negative feature is aimed at your front door, the mouth of your property, is the first step.

If you have a narrow gap similar to this picture, such as when there are two properties close together directly opposite your main door it will cause negative Qi to speed towards you.

One of the most significant external features is a pylon.  They are large, sharp and hard to ignore.  As well as bringing potential health issues they do send inauspicious Qi your way when they are in the vicinity of your property.  Depending on their location in relation to your home they can also have a negative impact on a member of the family.  For example if it is located in the Southwest this will affect the mother or an older female in the family. 

The edge of a neighbouring roofline will send Sha Qi your way but only when it is in the vicinity of your main door.

Roads while being 'virtual water'  can bring either positive or negative Qi with them.  The infamous T-junction, especially when it is part of a busy road plays its role in sending Sha Qi towards your door.   

If you have the bow of a road or a curved road coming towards your main door it is sending negative energy your way.

Negative features in the home are likely the result of design features or property layout.

Inside

So what negative features do you look for inside your home?

 A low beam above your main door, an upright or staircase in direct alignment with your main door are all negative features.   The beam will suppress any Qi entering, the upright will cause the Qi to dissipate and the staircase will result in Qi moving quickly down the stairs and colliding with Qi entering the door.

A straight hall from the front door to the back door sends fast moving negative Qi down its length resulting in missing Qi through the rest of the property.  This will cause an excess of Yin energy in a Yang environment and will make the residents feels lacklustre and short on motivation.

As with all things there are qualifiers to the above information and a professional consultant will identify what is important and what is not when conducting a Feng Shui audit.

Feng Shui and Missing Corners-Parents

The Eight Aspirations of Feng Shui are Career (north), Education and Study (northeast), Health and Longevity (east), Wealth (southeast), Fame and Recognition (south), Love and Relationships (southwest), Family (west) and Heaven and Mentor (northwest.)

When a location (corner) relating to an aspiration important to you is missing in the Big Tai Chi of your property the first thing to establish is whether this same location is missing in the Small Tai Chi of your living space.  When the locations are missing in both the Big and the Small Tai Chi it will prove difficult for you to achieve your desires.

Two of the most important locations in the Tai Chi is the Northwest (Heaven and Mentor) and the Southwest (Love and Relationships.)  These are the areas of the heads of the home or in a working environment the areas relating to management, either male (Northwest) or female (Southwest.)

Northwest and Southwest

In the Eight Aspirations the Southwest is the location of relationships in their many forms.  As well as intimate partnerships, it signifies the family bond, friendships with people you care about, your work colleagues, business associates and casual acquaintances.  If the Southwest of your home is missing it makes it difficult for you to activate the very important life skill of harmonious inter-personal associations.  It will make it particularly difficult for females as the Southwest is also the location of the female.  This is usually interpreted as the mother of the house however it just as likely signifies a female in a position of power and authority in the business world.  If you have a missing Southwest in the Big Tai Chi of the home it is important to locate the Southwest of the Small Tai Chi in your living area.  Even if this is not an auspicious location based on your Kua number, in the Eight Aspirations it is significant.

The Northwest is the location of Heaven and Mentor luck; it is also the location of the male.  If there is a missing corner here it will impact significantly on the success of the man of the house.  Achievement may remain just out of reach.  In the corporate world you will lack the support of your superiors and when promotions are there for the taking you will likely be overlooked.  Without the support of a mentor; which can be someone in the family, your bosses or - if you run your own business - like minded individuals who are happy to give you a helping hand, then success will remain elusive.  Again even if this is not an auspicious location based on your Kua number, if you are male and aspire to greatness, it is an area to pay attention to.  If you are an East group person the Northwest will be one of your inauspicious locations.  This means you should not be spending time in the area if you can avoid it.  The most important thing is to ensure it is not a missing corner either in the Big Tai Chi of the home or the Small Tai Chi of the living room.  

The Southwest also relates to Earth; the Northwest to Heaven.  Together they signify male and female; the ultimate Yang and Yin energies; both vital to creating harmony in the home and in a working situation. 

Regardless of your Kua number and your auspicious and inauspicious locations, they are two areas that, when present, can bring harmony and good fortune.  When they are missing, these positive energies may well remain elusive and just out of reach.

Feng Shui and the Lo-Shu Grid 1-3

The nine numbers of the original Lo-Shu Grid from the north following a clockwise cycle are 1, 8, 3, 4, 9, 2, 7 and 6.  The numbers opposite one another around the grid always add up to 10 and with the number 5 residing in the centre any row up, down or diagonally will add up to 15.

Each of these numbers and their associated direction has an element, colour, shape, family member, aspiration as well as more intangible aspects such as body parts or musical notes.  We will look at the fundamental parts of each number and how they affect us all.

All odd numbers represent yang energies and all even numbers represent yin energies even when the area itself may be the opposite. 

Number One (1) – This is the number of the north. It is one of the auspicious white stars of Feng Shui and is synonymous with career luck. One represents new beginnings, creativity, independence and self.  The north represents water; the colours blue and black; its shape is wavy. The middle son (Kan) has his home in the north and it signifies dark, winter, an excess of yin energy.  Water and the number 1 are both yang.  If the north represents the back of your home avoid placing a water feature here, especially a pond, pool, waterfall or swimming pool.  Water at the back can suggest lack of support in your endeavours. 

Number Two (2) – This is the number of the southwest.  It is a yin number which represents the yin energy of big earth and its shape is the even-sided square which represents a solid base; loving and nurturing energy.  Two represents a couple, balance, yin and yang; it signifies co-dependence, partnerships and co-operation; it invites choice. It is a number representing interaction with others, and unity.  Its colours are earth colours such as ochre.  The southwest is a vital area to care for as it represents the female, the mother, caring and nurturing, love and relationships in its many and varied forms.  Love and relationships between a couple, between family members and between friends.  This is predominantly a yin area (Kun) the receptive, the yielding.  

Number Three (3) – Three is the big wood area of the east and it signifies communication.  The number three is a yang number that signifies the trinity; in this instance father, mother and child and also time represented by past, present and future.  It also represents Heaven, Earth and Man which are the basis for Feng Shui practice.  It indicates pleasure achieved through creativity. The shape of the east is rectangular. 

This location represents the eldest son of the family (Chen) and signifies new life and upward growth.  Its colours are the darker olive or emerald greens.  Sons are known as the Dragons of the family and east is the location of the mighty Green Dragon.  If you choose symbolism an image of this celestial creature is auspicious here together with large round leaved lush plants. The east also represents health and longevity.  Growing bamboo, which is one of the many symbols of longevity, in the east of your garden is auspicious, however take care of the variety you choose as they grow fast and can take over if not controlled.  Other symbols of longevity are the pine tree, peach and the long-legged Crane.  These are often represented together in oriental paintings. This is the place to house your larger pieces of wooden furniture.

FENG SHUI and the Southwest

The Southwest of your home is the universal area relating to the female, to the mother of the home and to Love and Relationships.

Regardless of your Kua number and whether you are an East or a West Group person, if you are the matriarch of the home this area is important.  If you are single and looking for love this area can be enhanced to positively invite love into your life.

If you are a West group person this area will naturally be one of your auspicious locations.  If you are an East group person it will be one of your inauspicious locations however as the mother of the home you can still enhance it to your positive benefit.

It is important that this area is not missing or houses inauspicious elements such as the kitchen or the bathroom.  One solution to this issue is to enhance the Southwest of the living area and/or, in the case of seeking love, the master bedroom. 

Enhancing the Southwest of your home as a whole is enhancing the ‘Big Tai Chi’ and enhancing individual rooms is the ‘Small Tai Chi.’ The small tai chi can be enhanced when you have a missing corner, when you have a ‘poison arrow’ pointing directly towards the area you want to enhance or when there is a kitchen, toilet or storeroom in the way.  None of these areas should be enhanced in any way as it will cause more negative than positive results.

The Southwest is an Earth element area and benefits from the presence of crystals, pebbles and light.  Having a window in the Southwest with a faceted crystal displayed is a wonderful way of inviting positive Yang Chi Energy into the space. 

Fire creates Earth in the Five Elements and it is for this reason that light in the form of lamps, candles and the natural sunlight is so important.  The ultimate element to display in this corner is a crystal chandelier which incorporates the best of Fire (light) and Earth (crystals.)  The chandelier can be traditional or modern, large or small the important thing is to ensure it is the right size for the space.  Too large and it will ‘burn’ any good fortune created, too small and it will be ineffective.

Decorating the area in the fire colours of red, orange or bright yellow is also auspicious.  One thing to remember is to enhance any area in keeping with your likes, if you are displaying something you do not have an affinity with it will be fruitless because it is not who you are.

A fundamental requirement in Feng Shui is to keep all areas clean, bright and clutter-free.  If you are enhancing an area for a specific result this becomes even more important.  It allows positive, fresh Chi to permeate the area bringing with it positive results.

Quartz Crystals and FENG SHUI

In the practice of Feng Shui the element of Earth plays an important role throughout all seasons of the year.

Every third month in spring, summer, autumn and winter is said to be an Earth month.  Therefore the use of quartz crystals plays an important role in enhancing, producing and exhausting points of the compass and the other elements of Water, Wood, Fire and Metal when the Flying Stars conspire to cause negative energy.

In the Earth element areas of the Northeast, Centre and Southwest displaying crystals will create positive, auspicious Chi Energy. 

In the Northeast, clear crystal quartz points are an excellent enhancer for anyone undertaking study and learning.  A clear crystal globe, preferably one that can be spun daily, will also enhance learning.

In the centre displaying six round crystal spheres is an auspicious way of maintaining peace and harmony in the family.  The number six signifies heaven.   Earth enhances Metal (6) so the crystal is the enhancer which benefits from Heaven energy at the same time.  Displaying a rose quartz crystal apple also signifies peace.

The Southwest is the area of the female of the home, the mother and it is also the universal location for Love and Relationships.  This is an important area to get right because without the strength of the maternal influence the family will lack the solid earth energy required to stay together.

Any crystal in this area is beneficial.  An amethyst crystal cluster in the Southwest will keep the air and life force of the home clean and positive.  Amethyst stones placed in an area that receives sun for a lot of the day will help promote healing in the home however they will lose their colour if kept in the sunshine all the time.  Amethysts bathed in moonlight will calm and relax.  The amethyst will also help alleviate the effects of electro-magnetic fields caused by electrical equipment such as televisions.   

Rose quartz is known as the ‘Love stone’ and having it displayed in the Southwest will invite love and harmony into your home.  If you are enhancing this area to attract love into your life, displaying a pair of rose quartz mandarin ducks (or swans, or love birds) will benefit you.

Quartz crystals absorb negative as well as positive energies in the atmosphere so it is important that they are looked after.  When there has been illness or disagreements in the family it is auspicious to cleanse your crystals to rid them of the negative vibrations and restore them to their auspicious best.  They also absorb the energies of anyone who handles them so it is better if they are looked after by the person who can benefit most from their presence.  This can be particularly important for a student who has a clear crystal quartz point which they display on their study desk and carry with them to tests and examinations.

Other areas that benefit from the quartz crystal are the West and the Northwest, both Metal areas.  Metal is enhanced by Earth so quartz crystals in the Metal areas will strengthen the Metal element.  The Northwest is the area relating to the male, the father of the home so just like the Southwest crystals here will strengthen the energy of the father and the luck of heaven.
