FENG SHUI DIY

There are many approaches to the practice of Feng Shui.  It is quite easy for the beginner or DIY-er to mix different methods and become frustrated by the lack of results, either positive or negative.

When you choose to practise your own Feng Shui which method do you feel drawn to?

Because of the pace of our modern lives most people want to see results without any time delay and as such the newer forms of Feng Shui such as Eight Aspirations or symbolic placement of objects, as well as the use of colour, plants, mirrors amongst other things, have become popular.

However, Feng Shui is not a get-rich-quick system; it will not bring you overnight riches and it was never conceived to do so.   When used correctly its purpose is to harmonise individuals with their surroundings. 

Remember there are three luck aspects to our lives Heaven (Tian), Earth (Ti) and Man (Ren) and they all play a part in determining the direction your life takes.  They each contribute 33% to your life experience.  Heaven Luck is predetermined, it is the luck we have least influence over.  Heaven Luck is that you bring into the world at birth.  Earth Luck in part is Feng Shui and Man Luck is your direct contribution, what you do to help yourself.

8 Mansions Feng Shui for the home and 8 Mansions Feng Shui for the individual are methods derived from the San Yuan School of Feng Shui and are popular DIY methods, although currently the personal 8 Mansions is more widely known and practiced.  They are however, both necessary to be effective.

 

Classical Feng Shui focuses on external forms (San He School) to determine the quality of Qi in the environment.  These forms used to be natural landforms alone however in our modern 21st century world manmade forms are also taken into consideration.  The San Yuan School of Classical Feng Shui looks at time and how it influences the flow of Qi. In Classical Feng Shui the four considerations in any consultation are Location, Direction, Time and Residents.  All are studied by a practitioner to ascertain the quality of Qi in the environment, which in turn is entering a property, and what its effects on the occupants are.  This is not an method that lends itself to a DIY approach.

Any internal Feng Shui will only ever be as good as the quality of Qi in the external environment.  If there is Sha Qi (negative Qi) outside that is what will enter the home.  Whilst it is possible for anyone to look at and determine negative structures outside they also have to know the effect they will have on the residents of a property, why, and when, whether it is business premises or a home.

While Feng Shui is a powerful and effective tool it will only ever be as good as the quality of its application.  So when you are serious about improving the quality of your life; when you are ready to move home; when you want to improve your career prospects consider whether a professional consultation or a DIY approach will bring you the desired results.

FENG SHUI and MISSING CORNERS-Family

As well as the Eight Aspirations each of the four primary and four secondary corners of the Lo-Shu grid relate to members of the family.      

Last time we highlighted the importance of the Northwest and Southwest and their effect on the male and the female (the mother and father) of the home.  Now we will complete the family picture and discover who will be impacted by missing corners in the remaining six locations.

East                        The East is the location of the eldest son, the Dragon of the family.  This is the best place to locate the bedroom for your first son to thrive.  When missing it will make it difficult for him to grow; an important point in this big wood area of the Pa Kua.  As well as the eldest son this could easily refer to a young protégé in the business world and when the area is missing in the home it will seriously affect his path up the corporate ladder.

Southeast           This is the location of the eldest daughter of the family.  She represents the wind which brings positive energy into the area, helping her thrive.  Her positive growth will be seriously depleted if this corner is missing.  In a business environment she will struggle to be heard if she lacks the support of the southeast at home.

South                    Your middle daughter will benefit from a bedroom located in this area.  The south is the fire area relating to fame, recognition and a place in the limelight.  Your middle daughter will not be overlooked at home or at work when she spends time in this location.  When it is missing she will be seen but not heard and her natural exuberance will be suppressed.

West                     The West is the corner of the youngest daughter.  Nestled safely between the locations of the mother (Southwest) and father (Northwest) she represents the lake and when this corner is not missing she is well cared for and nurtured.  A missing corner in the West however will not only affect the wellbeing of the youngest daughter it will also impact family harmony.

North                    Your middle son will be adversely affected when the North corner is missing.  This is the area of water and is connected to career and a constant flow of money.  All working members of the family will feel the negative impact if the area is missing.

Northeast           The Northeast relates to the youngest son.  Having a bedroom in this area will help him thrive at school and beyond.  The area of personal growth is important to ensure there is no lack of focus when studying and learning.  This small earth area signifying the mountain will provide solid support when it is present; however when it is missing direction and focus is uncertain.   

Depending on the size of your family missing corners may not have any negative effect; if you only have one son then the East is the important area and the North/Northeast will not have a significant impact.  They will however impact the aspiration associated with those areas.  Missing corners in the Big Tai Chi of your home will always have a negative effect on some aspect of life.  The Small Tai Chi will then take on greater importance.  Determine the aspiration, or aspirations, you seek to achieve and then locate your main door or your living area in that corner of your home.  Your front door will activate positive energy each time it is used and spending lots of time in the living area will activate positive energy and attract positive experiences.  Your personal impact will also play a large part in achieving success, whether it be in finding the job of your dreams, your ideal partner (work or personal) or gaining recognition and receiving acknowledgement for your endeavours.

The Eight Aspirations of Feng Shui are Career (north), Education and Study (northeast), Health and Longevity (east), Wealth (southeast), Fame and Recognition (south), Love and Relationships (southwest), Family (west) and Heaven and Mentor (northwest.)

When a location (corner) relating to an aspiration important to you is missing in the Big Tai Chi of your property the first thing to establish is whether this same location is missing in the Small Tai Chi of your living space.  When the locations are missing in both the Big and the Small Tai Chi it will prove difficult for you to achieve your desires.

Two of the most important locations in the Tai Chi is the Northwest (Heaven and Mentor) and the Southwest (Love and Relationships.)  These are the areas of the heads of the home or in a working environment the areas relating to management, either male (Northwest) or female (Southwest.)

Northwest and Southwest

In the Eight Aspirations the Southwest is the location of relationships in their many forms.  As well as intimate partnerships, it signifies the family bond, friendships with people you care about, your work colleagues, business associates and casual acquaintances.  If the Southwest of your home is missing it makes it difficult for you to activate the very important life skill of harmonious inter-personal associations.  It will make it particularly difficult for females as the Southwest is also the location of the female.  This is usually interpreted as the mother of the house however it just as likely signifies a female in a position of power and authority in the business world.  If you have a missing Southwest in the Big Tai Chi of the home it is important to locate the Southwest of the Small Tai Chi in your living area.  Even if this is not an auspicious location based on your Kua number, in the Eight Aspirations it is significant.

The Northwest is the location of Heaven and Mentor luck; it is also the location of the male.  If there is a missing corner here it will impact significantly on the success of the man of the house.  Achievement may remain just out of reach.  In the corporate world you will lack the support of your superiors and when promotions are there for the taking you will likely be overlooked.  Without the support of a mentor; which can be someone in the family, your bosses or - if you run your own business - like minded individuals who are happy to give you a helping hand, then success will remain elusive.  Again even if this is not an auspicious location based on your Kua number, if you are male and aspire to greatness, it is an area to pay attention to.  If you are an East group person the Northwest will be one of your inauspicious locations.  This means you should not be spending time in the area if you can avoid it.  The most important thing is to ensure it is not a missing corner either in the Big Tai Chi of the home or the Small Tai Chi of the living room.  

The Southwest also relates to Earth; the Northwest to Heaven.  Together they signify male and female; the ultimate Yang and Yin energies; both vital to creating harmony in the home and in a working situation. 

Regardless of your Kua number and your auspicious and inauspicious locations, they are two areas that, when present, can bring harmony and good fortune.  When they are missing, these positive energies may well remain elusive and just out of reach.

When a location (corner) relating to an aspiration important to you is missing in the Big Tai Chi of your property the first thing to establish is whether this same location is missing in the Small Tai Chi of your living space.  When the locations are missing in both the Big and the Small Tai Chi it will prove difficult for you to achieve your desires.

A loving family and a long and healthy life are two of the most sought after desires in Feng Shui practice.  Financial wealth may have a strong pull on the emotions but without your health or someone to share your life, it will be lacking the positive energy necessary to create a happy and fulfilling existence.

West and East

Looking at the Big Tai Chi of your property, and confirming there is a missing corner in the west of your home will make it difficult for you to have children.  Not everyone wants to be a parent it is true however if you do this is an important area to consider.  The west is a small metal area so if it is missing and the layout of  your home is such that you can incorporate a circular design into the missing area; an area that will be used regularly;  you will go a long way to making up for the lack.  As part of your garden design a circular flower bed with plants will recreate a sense of growth and new life in the area.  Or if the west coincides with the main door of your home, having a circular driveway which is often used will bring lots of yang energy into the space.

Earth energy in the west is auspicious so a garden design combining squares and circles will energise the location.  Bring the earth element to bear with natural material seating and tables and either locate them on a circular base or arrange them in a circular fashion.  Use this area often to activate the yang energy necessary to bring the location to life.

In symbolic Feng Shui the elephant with his trunk down is said to attract the luck associated with having a family.  There are many earth element images available.

In your bedroom the west is the place to display pictures of children aplenty. 

Without good health living a long and fulfilling life is difficult.  The location of health is the east, the area of new growth and vitality.  It is the big wood area of the Pa Kua and if it is missing in the overall design of your property good health will be hard to come by.  The east is the location of the eldest son of the family as well as health and longevity.  An abundant and vibrant rectangular flower bed to the east will create growth and new life and as long as the plants are cared for and not allowed to fade their positive energy will bring benefit to the home.  Having a moving water feature will also serve to ‘feed’ the growth element here.  It is important to ensure that the area is used frequently otherwise it will remain a yin and negative area lacking in the yang energy of movement and positive vibrations.

Using the Small Tai Chi of the living space and symbolic Feng Shui, images of the peach, the deer, the crane, bamboo and the pine tree are all associated with longevity and are often displayed together in Chinese paintings.  Depending on your culture and likes and dislikes however opting for something that represents long-life and with which you have a natural affinity will invite positive energy, energy suited to your way of life.

Feng Shui practised correctly will activate positive energy in your life and home and is designed to enhance and improve however, it is not a replacement for caring for yourself and having a lifestyle in keeping with good health.

Feng Shui and Missing Corners-Wealth

When a location (corner) relating to an aspiration important to you is missing in the Big Tai Chi of your property the first thing to establish is whether this same location is missing in the Small Tai Chi of your living space.  When the locations are missing in both the Big and the Small Tai Chi it will prove difficult for you to achieve your desires.

In the eight aspirations formula of Feng Shui, as well as the flow of money generated from your career (north) the southeast is the wealth area connected with an accumulation of wealth; long term wealth.  If this area is missing it will prove difficult to increase the level of family wealth and hold on to it.  The element connected to wealth is water; water is the element of the north and it is the enhancing element for the wood location of the southeast. 

North and Southeast

If you identify the Big Tai Chi of your entire property, including the garden, the north and the southeast are great places to locate water features.  Depending on the space you have available they can be as simple as a small pond.  In the north a decorative water feature made from the metal element will both enhance and activate the area.  If the north of your property or your home is missing then displaying a water feature in the north of the living room will be auspicious.

The north of your living room is always going to be a naturally darker area making attraction more difficult however painting the walls white will incorporate the enhancing element of metal and brighten the space at the same time. 

In the southeast of your garden a pond with plants and fish will create auspicious attraction energy.  Still water is used to absorb negative energy so is not appropriate for the purpose of enhancing for wealth.

If this space is missing in your garden; if you do not have a garden; or if the southeast corner of your house is missing; enhancing the southeast of your living room will activate the energy associated with attracting wealth.

  

Colourful flowers and a water feature suitable for the space you have available will both be auspicious for the area.

The southeast is a naturally lighter and brighter area than the north and painting it blue will calm the intensity of the space and enhance it at the same time.

Whatever wealth means to the individual it makes sense to create a living space that is conducive to attracting a level of wealth in keeping with personal desires and expectations.

Feng Shui and Missing Corners-Children

During their early life your children require only to feel loved and safe.  Keeping them healthy; and having good luck in their studies will cause difficulties for them if there is a missing corner in either the northeast (education and study luck) or in the east (health and longevity.) 

Northeast and East

The northeast is the area in the eight aspirations concerned with education and study luck.  Having your child sitting in this location when studying will help them concentrate.  They can either face the northeast when sitting doing their homework or sit in the northeast facing their Fu Wei (personal growth) direction based on their Kua number.  

The northeast may also benefit from the addition of lights and a fun way of bringing these into the space for your child is with lava or glitter lamps.  These are introducing two of the three Feng Shui enhancing elements of light and movement. 

In the eight aspirations the east of your home is the location connected to health and longevity.  It relates to Yang Wood, tall and straight trees.  It represents growth Qi, a vital component for your child’s healthy development.  Displaying the symbolic image of the mighty Dragon synonymous with the yang energy of the male offspring will bring positive benefits for your child as well as all other members of the family.  The east is the location of the eldest son of the family and it could be advantageous to have his bedroom located in this area if possible.

If your child’s bedroom also serves as their study room it is more beneficial if the two areas can be divided in some way, such as with a chest of drawers or a screen.  The bedroom is predominantly a place of rest and even though children should have more yang than yin elements in their bedroom being constantly reminded of their studies will not necessarily attract the right Qi for rest and rejuvenation.

Depending on your desired aspiration, the rooms you can activate will vary. 

For example, if you have school or college age children you can activate either the northeast corner of the living room or the northeast corner of your child’s bedroom to attract positive expectations for their learning and study.

When health and longevity are important to you either the east of your living, dining or bedroom can be activated.

Fame and recognition are best activated in the living room.

North, South and Southwest

If you aspire to success in your chosen career the areas to concentrate on are the career area of the north, the fame and recognition area of the south and the relationship area of the southwest. 

When the north of your home is missing it will impact on the day-to-day success you achieve in your working life.  This makes it important to be able to activate the Small Tai Chi of your living space.  The element associated with the north is water and a water feature with an inward flow of water displayed in the living room will activate the area.  You can also paint the area blue or white (the white of metal will enhance the north based on the productive cycle of the Five Elements.)

The area of fame and recognition is important to activate for career success as without recognition in your working life you are unlikely to attract the attention of your superiors and promotion may well pass you by.  When you run your own business this area is particularly important to get your name, and your Company’s name known to your chosen market.  Decorate and enhance the south of your living room with the red of the area or the enhancing colour of green which belongs to the wood element (wood enhances fire.)  Red is a vibrant colour which can become ‘dangerous’ if used to excess, so be sure it is not overwhelming and symbolically ‘burning’ your aspiration.  Lights belong to the fire element and can be used as an alternative to the colour red. 

The southwest is the relationship area.  In your career it is important to cultivate positive relationships with your colleagues and superiors otherwise your career may stagnate and go nowhere and you will be unhappy in your working life.  Enhancing the living area with the fire colours of the south, with lights, as well as smooth round natural crystals will bring definite benefits in all your relationships.

Wealth and FENG SHUI

In the last blog on Vases we covered wealth in its widest sense however we will concentrate on wealth in the financial sense this time round.

The first thing to do when enhancing your home for wealth is to be aware of the different directions in your home using a standard compass.

In the Eight Aspirations Formula of Feng Shui the universal long term accumulated wealth direction is the Southeast, the area of Small Wood.  The universal direction for wealth acquired from your career, which is interpreted as an ongoing supply of money rather than an accumulation, is the North, the area of Water.

Both of these areas can be enhanced to invite wealth into your home.

The North benefits best from a constant flow of Water, such as a Water feature representing a waterfall.  It is important to ensure that any water flowing is coming into the home and not out.  Whether your water feature is an indoor one or an outdoor one the flow of water should be directed towards the home.  This is to ensure the money flows in and not out.

The Southeast benefits best from a body of Water.  Whether this is an outdoor pond or an indoor aquarium it represents accumulated wealth and as such should always be kept clean and well maintained.  If you have an indoor aquarium having at least eight gold fish and one black fish is auspicious.  Their movement keeps the water moving helping to avoid stagnation. Whether your water feature is indoors or outdoors if you have stagnant water (water that is not moving) it is representative of the wealth in your life, stagnant.

In the Eight Mansions Formula, a personalised formula of Feng Shui based on your date of birth you have a Kua number.  When this number is correctly identified it gives you four auspicious and four inauspicious directions around the compass.  Your overall auspicious direction is your Sheng Chi (overall good fortune, which includes wealth.)  Once you know the locations based on your personal Kua number you can enhance your Sheng Chi to invite wealth.  This may not be with water it will depend on the location of your most auspicious direction. 

To maximise your auspicious and suppress your inauspicious directions it is necessary to know the Five Element Theory and its three cycles, the productive, the exhaustive and the destructive, to effectively capture positive Chi Energy and invite wealth into your life.

Below is a brief précis of enhancers for each of the four primary and four secondary points around the compass.

North – water as discussed above – metal coins – metallic wealth toad* with a coin in his mouth

Northeast/Southwest – crystal wealth ships** – faux diamonds – semi-precious gem tree – wish-fulfilling jewel

East/Southeast – water – jade or money plant – wooden wealth ship

South – jade or money plant – wooden wealth ship

West/Northwest – crystal or metal wealth ships – any crystals or semi-precious stones – metal coins – wealth toad

*Wealth toad should have his coin Yang side up.  You can display as many wealth toads as you wish in multiples of 3.  3, 6 and 9 are the most auspicious.  The toad likes to remain inconspicuous so is best placed low down under tables, chairs, anywhere where he is not too prominent.  Face at least one of the toads outward to invite money in; the rest can be facing inward.  You can have them appearing to come from the universal wealth direction of the southeast and each of your auspicious directions based on your personal Kua number.

**Wealth ships should be auspicious.  Displaying a war ship or a ship with cannons is inauspicious.  A trading ship such as the Cutty Sark which brought wealth with it is auspicious.

Feng Shui and LOVE

Do you Love yourself the same as you would like someone else to Love you?  How you feel about you has a huge impact on how someone else will feel about you. 

Are you looking for Love?  

Are you seeking a close, intimate and loving relationship with your ‘special someone?’ 

Are you looking for more Love from family and friends?

Love covers a multitude of meanings such as the unconditional Love a parent has for their child; the unconditional Love a pet has for its owner; the passionate Love of an intimate relationship.

In the practice of Feng Shui Love and Relationships is one of the Eight Aspirations and the universal location you can enhance to invite Love into your life is the Southwest. 

In the Five Elements the Southwest is an Earth area.  Earth elements such as crystals are ideal for this area as well as the enhancing element of Fire.  Fire creates Earth in the Five Elements and will enhance and increase the power of any crystals.  The combination of crystals and fire in a chandelier is particularly potent.  Red candles are also auspicious.

Rose Quartz is known as the ‘Love stone’ and displaying mandarin ducks or swans (both stay devoted to one partner for life), hearts, apples (represent peace and harmony) or round quartz balls (harmonious relationships) in this stone are all beneficial.

When you enhance for a one-on-one relationship anything displayed should be in pairs.    

When you enhance for a more active social life then groups or multiple items are recommended.

Birds, particularly lovebirds suggest romance and seeing pairs of any birds indicate love.  Images of pairs of birds in the Southwest are auspicious.

If you are activating for a busier social life then enhance the Southwest with images of butterflies.  They signify new beginnings.  Beware of using them when activating for couples as they mean Love but Love that is fleeting and light-hearted rather than long lasting.

As well as enhancing the Southwest for Love you can also use your personalised Love direction based on your Kua number.

There is also what is known as Peach Blossom Luck.  This is based on your animal sign at birth and by activating your ‘Peach Blossom’ Animal in the right way you can help attract Love into your life. 

Each of the 12 astrological animal signs has a ‘Peach Blossom’ animal they can use to enhance for attracting Love into their life.  The Peach Blossom animals are located in each of the four primary compass points of North, East, South and West and you can place the auspicious image of your Peach Blossom animal in its compass direction in either your living area or your bedroom.

FAMILY Harmony with Feng Shui

However big, or small your family, enhancing your home to improve the Feng Shui for all its residents will bring a sense of peace and harmony to everyone.

In the Eight Aspirations Formula of Feng Shui the area associated with family, with descendants luck, is the West.

So whether you already have your family, or you are not yet ready to start your family, enhancing this area in your living room or family room is auspicious.

The West is Small Metal, its number is 7 and it is the best place to display a portrait or picture of all the family looking happy and united.  Shining a light at the picture will enhance its positive effect even more.

There are a few things to consider before displaying the family picture in this area.

If by hanging a picture in this area it is either a) under a low beam, b) opposite a toilet door or c) opposite the front door, then it is best to display it elsewhere.  These are all inauspicious and will have a negative, rather than positive effect on the family.

Having the picture under a low beam will symbolically ‘press down’ on the family causing ill health and stress.

Opposite a toilet door brings the negative associations of the toilet to the family.

Opposite the front door indicates that as soon as the family enter they will go back out again, preventing family harmony.

If you have not yet started a family and wish to do so, then you can display the images of elephants with their trunks down, a pomegranate made from earth materials and pictures of babies.  The pictures of babies can also be displayed in the master bedroom.

Each of the eight compass directions relates to a member of the family however when you have young children the most important areas to look after are the Northwest (Father) and the Southwest (Mother.)

Your young children rely on you for support in their childhood so it is important to look after the areas that directly relate to you, their parents.

Both areas benefit from being well-lit (and this is especially important in the Southwest where fire (light) enhances the element of the area which is earth.

Display crystals, lights and anything relating to the earth element in the Southwest.

Display wind chimes, a picture of man of the house and activate the area with plenty of Yang elements such as the family television.
