Magic Ratio in the Office

The Magic Ratio of Feng Shui is exactly the same as the Golden Ratio; the Golden Rectangle or the Golden Mean.

 

Historically in the West it has been incorporated into the design of buildings such as the Parthenon in Athens, the Taj Mahal in India and the Great Pyramid in Egypt. 

In Feng Shui terms all of these structures are Yin (still) Energy as they were built as either temples (in the case of the Parthenon) or burial chambers (The Taj Mahal and the Great Pyramid.)

  

However, as they are also a link with the heavens, by conforming to the 1:1.618 rectangle they were auspicious for their purpose and their external appearance is an attraction for millions of visitors each year.

 

This is borne out by the fascination that these structures have held for many generations past and will no doubt remain so for many generations to come.

Yang Feng Shui is concerned with the living, breathing world; with life and activity, with light and sound and with shapes and colour.

 

It is for this reason that using the Magic Ratio to create an auspicious and harmonious home will, by extension, create a happy home.

It is for this reason that using the Magic Ratio to create a productive and  flourishing business space will, by extension, create a profitable business, complete with happy and dedicated staff.

When you have your own office building, Hotel or even Restaurant, the first thing your clients will see is the foyer area or entrance.  In Feng Shui terms this section should be inviting and welcoming.  Ensure it is well lit, clean, clear and tidy creating a feeling of positive expectation for the visitor.  This is an area that will benefit from having each of the Five Elements present.

It is important however to remember scale, so if the space is small the décor and fittings should be chosen with care to maximise the dimensions without compromising on the attraction of positive energy.

Enhancing this area by utilising the Magic Ratio of 1:1.618 will invite positive Chi to enter and gather harmoniously before flowing through the rest of the building in a gentle and meandering way.

The staff in this area will be positively influenced by the effects of the Magic Ratio and they will greet your visitors and guests in a welcoming way making them instantly feel comfortable and important.

Flooring can be laid to demarcate the space and colour on the walls can mirror this. Place a seating area within the Magic Ratio in proportion to the size of the foyer to create unity.

When renovating or updating your office space, Hotel or Restaurant, aim to create auspicious spaces according to the Magic Ratio.  Not only will this attract success in your business endeavours, the benefits of creating these inviting areas will also ensure your employees are happier, work better and are more committed to supporting the business and its positive growth.

Feng Shui and the Magic Ratio-Home and Garden

Magic Ratio in the Home

The Magic Ratio as it is known in Feng Shui or the Golden Ratio, as it is probably more commonly known in the West is said to appeal to the human psyche making shapes and living environments that conform to this 1:1.618 rectangle harmonious and auspicious.

So what has this to do with Feng Shui? 

The simple answer is that this Magic Ratio, when used in room layout creates an instant auspicious and open feel.

If you have a long narrow room, such as may be present in a traditional Victorian style property using the proportions of the Magic Ratio to lay out the space you spend most of your time in will invite a feeling of harmony and optimism.  The area will instantly appear brighter and more spacious.

Even in a small space this Ratio will open up the area making it feel more user-friendly and roomy.

Obstacles or blocks to your success will also begin to disappear inviting positive results into all your endeavours.

  

Using the Magic Ratio is your living and sleeping areas will instantly create a feeling of wellbeing.  Any space ‘left over’ can be separated with wall or floor covering, a piece of furniture, a screen; anything that will create the divide.

By measuring the length and width of a room and multiplying the results by 1.618 the answer will identify exactly what length the room should be.

For example if your living space is 18 feet wide multiply that by 1.618 and the answer = 29.124 feet.  Ideally your space should be demarcated 18 x 29.124 feet.

In an open plan living space whether a home or an apartment this Magic Ratio can be used to great effect to separate the various areas to create harmony throughout.

On a smaller scale placing a family photograph in a frame that reflects the Magic Ratio is incredibly auspicious as is the presence of a mirror with these proportions.  Dining or coffee tables, side tables,  hall tables; will also prove effective and propitious.

Magic Ratio in the Garden

Just as in your living and sleeping spaces, regardless of the size of your garden, the Magic Ratio can be used to bring a sense of space and sanctuary to your outside room.

If you are fortunate enough to have a large outdoor space you can create more than one of these Magic Ratio ‘rooms’ and use each one for a different purpose; for family and social space or for quiet and meditative space.

The Magic Ratio of 1:1.618 can be separated from other areas by planting hedges or erecting trellis with plants growing over it to provide screening and privacy.

Within the Magic Ratio you can arrange your outdoor furniture in auspicious Feng Shui configurations just as you would in your living area to invite harmony into the space.

A well-maintained garden will always invite auspicious Feng Shui and by incorporating this with the Magic Ratio you can make it into a space that will ooze Sheng Chi (auspicious energy.)  Remember, the quality of Chi that enters your home whether from the front or back will only ever be as good as the quality of your outside space.

It is both satisfying and auspicious to make the effort to attract auspicious Chi, and in addition, having effectively turned your garden into one, or many, outdoor rooms expands your living space and being as one with the natural world.

If you live in an apartment and you have a balcony, you can still use this principle and place growing plants and flowers to activate the space as well as a seating area if you have the space.  This is a very effective method of maximizing your Feng Shui in a limited space.

FAMILY Harmony with Feng Shui

However big, or small your family, enhancing your home to improve the Feng Shui for all its residents will bring a sense of peace and harmony to everyone.

In the Eight Aspirations Formula of Feng Shui the area associated with family, with descendants luck, is the West.

So whether you already have your family, or you are not yet ready to start your family, enhancing this area in your living room or family room is auspicious.

The West is Small Metal, its number is 7 and it is the best place to display a portrait or picture of all the family looking happy and united.  Shining a light at the picture will enhance its positive effect even more.

There are a few things to consider before displaying the family picture in this area.

If by hanging a picture in this area it is either a) under a low beam, b) opposite a toilet door or c) opposite the front door, then it is best to display it elsewhere.  These are all inauspicious and will have a negative, rather than positive effect on the family.

Having the picture under a low beam will symbolically ‘press down’ on the family causing ill health and stress.

Opposite a toilet door brings the negative associations of the toilet to the family.

Opposite the front door indicates that as soon as the family enter they will go back out again, preventing family harmony.

If you have not yet started a family and wish to do so, then you can display the images of elephants with their trunks down, a pomegranate made from earth materials and pictures of babies.  The pictures of babies can also be displayed in the master bedroom.

Each of the eight compass directions relates to a member of the family however when you have young children the most important areas to look after are the Northwest (Father) and the Southwest (Mother.)

Is either of these corners ‘missing’ in your home?

If they are missing from the whole house, which in Feng Shui is known as the Big Tai Chi can you enhance the Small Tai Chi?  This is individual rooms, and for Family Harmony the living room or family room is best.

Your young children rely on you for support in their childhood so it is important to look after the areas that directly relate to you, their parents.

Both areas benefit from being well-lit (and this is especially important in the Southwest where fire (light) enhances the element of the area which is earth.

Display crystals, lights and anything relating to the earth element in the Southwest.

Display wind chimes, a picture of man of the house and activate the area with plenty of Yang elements such as the family television.

Dine Auspiciously with Feng Shui

Your dining room is an important area to get right to benefit all members of your family.

Ideally, its best location is in or near the centre of the home ‘the heart of the home, or the Tai Chi.’ This signifies unity and strength in the family when they come together to dine; it invites family harmony.

If your ground floor is an open plan design, are you able to locate the dining area in the centre?  If not, it is better hidden deep inside the home rather than near the front door.   This is not considered to be a public area of your home so is best away from view.

What is the shape of your dining table?  Regular shapes are more auspicious than irregular shapes.  A rectangular table is symbolic of the Wood element, which in turn signifies growth.  A square table is symbolic of the Earth element, which signifies grounding or stability.  Round, oval and eight-sided tables are also auspicious.

The table is best made of wood (growth.)  Some modern dining suites have glass-topped tables and although they may be stylish, glass is a Yin Earth element and not conducive to lively family interaction around the table.  It also gives the impression of having nothing solid to hold the food.

Is the table big enough to comfortably sit all members of the family?  If everyone is huddled together it suggests a feeling of lack.

Your dining chairs are best if they are big enough to sit on comfortably, but not fussy in design.  You can inadvertently create intangible negative Chi Energy by sitting on a stained dining room chair.  

Now your family seating arrangements:  These are best if all members of your family are able to sit facing one of their auspicious directions based on their individual Kua numbers.*  More especially, if they are able to face their Tien Yi (Health) direction.  If they face their Sheng Chi (success) direction it can sometimes have the effect of creating a competitive stance across the dining table, instead of a harmonious one.

A good balance of elements is important in the dining room.  If the décor is too dark the level of conversation at mealtime is likely to be muted or non-existent and if it is too bright, some heated discussions may ensue.

One very auspicious element to incorporate into your dining room design is a large mirror which reflects the table.  This symbolically doubles any food on the table and in the practice of Feng Shui, an abundance of food is considered to be wealth manifested.  (Making the mirror big enough to reflect all members of the family without cutting off their heads will benefit everyone.)

Whatever part of the home houses the dining room it is one area that benefits from incorporating all of the five elements.  The shapes, colours, pictures, lighting and soft furnishings can be pulled together to combine a harmonious feel and create a positive environment to spend time.

A chandelier above the dining table combines the very best of the Earth element (crystals) with the Fire element (light.)

Having a wooden dining table introduces a Yin Wood element while displaying a vase of fresh flowers introduces a Yang Wood element.  China plates, glassware and cutlery combine Earth and Metal and having a soothing Water feature in the room will introduce the Water element.

Your Career using Feng Shui

As you saw in A – Auspicious Aspirations, one of the Eight Aspirations in Feng Shui focuses on Career Luck.

Its universal direction is the North, which is a Water element area.

This is the place to focus your attention, in your home or office, if career is important to you.

If you are starting out on your career path, having a Mentor, either outside the home or someone older in your family, to support and encourage you, can give you a head start.

The Northwest is the area relating to Mentor Luck and fortuitously it is the area known as Big Metal.

In the Five Elements of Feng Shui Metal ‘creates’ Water, so activating the North with metallic objects is auspicious.

The Northwest is the area of the male and it is also known as ‘Heaven’s Gate.’

By activating the North with elements relating to this Yang masculine area you are inviting the positive Chi Energy of heaven necessary to give you a helping hand on your career path.

Metal is a Yang element, so displaying wind chimes in the North will invite lots of Yang Energy. A six-rod hollow metal wind chime is the most auspicious (six is the number of the Northwest, of heaven.)

You can also house your television or music centre here.  Plenty of Yang Chi Energy will invite plenty of support.

In addition, enhancing the area with the element of the North, which is Yang Water, invites lots of positive Chi Energy into the space.

The Water must be Yang (moving Water) and a perfect combination of the Northwest and the North is a six-tier water feature in your home (six is the number of the Northwest; one is the number of the North.)  The Water should be falling towards you and not away from you otherwise any good fortune created by the water feature is going elsewhere.

One major taboo to avoid:  Water is extremely inauspicious when displayed in a bedroom, so if you live in an apartment and the North is your bedroom then the best solution is to display the image of a Turtle or a Tortoise instead.

The turtle provides support so in an ideal situation will be behind you.  However, as long as it is in the North it will work its magic.   Please, bear in mind - no Water in the bedroom - ever!

To complete our exploration of the areas of the North, the Northeast is the universal area relating to Education and Study Luck (to personal development) and in a new career this is also an area important to the positive development of your future.

The Northeast is an Earth area.  Enhancing with Earth elements and light (Fire) will activate the luck of personal development.

An auspicious image is the crystal globe, or a globe made with precious and semi-precious gemstones.  This is especially relevant if your business or career is international.

In addition, light (Fire in the Five Elements) enhances the Earth element so bright light is auspicious.  If used creatively it can enhance the crystal element making the area come alive with positive Yang Chi Energy.

One final point:  Stay focused on your goal.  Work every day towards your goal.  Your contribution is important for these enhancements to work effectively.

Bedroom Feng Shui

Your bedroom is your sanctuary and whether you are currently living alone or share your bedroom with a partner, it is the place you escape to, to refresh your body, mind and spirit.

Having your bedroom as a multi-function room is inauspicious Feng Shui.  Your bedroom is a place of rest and as such there should be more Yin than Yang elements.

Televisions, exercise equipment or even work creates too much Yang Energy.  It can result in lack of sleep, restlessness and the inability to totally relax.

It’s also important to keep the room clear of clutter, whether it is in cupboards, drawers or under the bed.

When decorating this very important room, the colours you choose will have an impact on the type of Energy you attract.

Earth element colours are always auspicious.  They are grounding colours and also Yin so are perfect for your bedroom.  Depending on the stage you are in your life, the accessories you choose will vary.  Young people or couples can introduce elements of brighter Yang into the accessories.  More mature couples benefit from darker shades to create relaxation and peace.

You will benefit from your bed having a solid headboard and being placed against a solid wall.  This provides you with support and security while you sleep.

If space allows, the best position for your bed is diagonally opposite the bedroom door.  If this means your bed is underneath a window this can create a lack of support.  If you have no other option, then at least ensure you have a heavy window covering closed at night to provide support.

A major bedroom taboo is having a mirror reflecting your bed.

This suggests inviting a third party into your relationship.  The third party can be a rival, a family member or even work.  It also creates an unsettled feeling which can prevent you from sleeping well.

What is opposite your bedroom door?  Is it a bathroom door?  Is it the staircase?  Is it another bedroom?

The best solution to these situations is to place some kind of ‘barrier’ between the two.  If you have the space, hang a six-rod hollow metal windchime.  The rods will absorb any negative Energy created and the movement of the wind chime will dissipate the Energy.

En-suite rooms are a fact of our modern life.  They do, however, cause inauspicious Energy.  If you have an en-suite door that is positioned at the side of your bed, is it possible for you to block your sight of it with a free standing screen?

If you have overhead cupboards above your head when you sleep, or a beam, this has the effect of pressing down on your head.  It can cause headaches.

A canopy over the bed or a four poster bed with a canopy is an effective way of hiding any overhead beams.

Aspirations and Auspicious Feng Shui

What is an Aspiration?
One dictionary definition of ‘Aspiration’ is ‘A strong desire for high achievement, an ambition.’

What does ‘Auspicious’ mean?
One dictionary definition of ‘Auspicious’ is ‘Suggesting a positive and successful future.’


These definitions are very apt in describing the Aspirations identified in the practice of Auspicious Feng Shui.


The Eight Aspirations Formula of Feng Shui recognises eight categories of good fortune; categories said to encompass all areas of life, and when captured allow you to experience a fulfilled and happy existence, free from negative or inauspicious energies (Chi.)  

This Formula is not one of the traditional formulas of Feng Shui however it is a popular formula in the West particularly.

The ‘Eight Aspirations’:	Direction	Enhance with:
Career Luck	North	Water; a Turtle
Education and Study Luck (personal development)	Northeast	Crystal Globe; Light
Family and Health Luck	East	Round leaf plants; Water
Wealth Luck	Southeast	Flowers; Water
Fame and Recognition Luck	South	Fire; the Horse
Love and Relationships Luck	Southwest	Crystals; Fire
Children and Descendants Luck	West	Family pictures; Crystals

To awaken any of these ‘aspirations’symbolic Feng Shui is used.  Each of the four primary and four secondary locations around the compass are enhanced and activated by objects, images, symbols, pictures, paintings, crystals, water and plants to invite the Luck associated with each area.


This is a basic description of a few of the symbolic enhancers used in Feng Shui. 


Light, sound and movement are also necessary to create active Yang Energy in your home and workplace.


The beauty of this particular practice is that you can activate as few, or as many, of the areas as you desire.


Be greedy, go for all eight! You have much more to gain than to lose.


Not everybody will want all of these, so you get to decide which of the Aspirations is important to you.


If you already have a successful career you may not feel it necessary to activate the North.
If you are finished studying you may not feel it necessary to activate the Northeast.
If you have your family and are currently healthy you may not feel it necessary to activate the East.
If you have wealth you may not feel it necessary to activate the Southeast.
If you have fame and recognition you may not feel it necessary to activate the South.
If you have the perfect Love Relationship you may not feel it necessary to activate the Southwest.
If you have a happy family unit you may not feel it necessary to activate the West.
If you have a mentor, someone who supports you through life, you may not feel it necessary to activate the Northwest.


If you think it isn’t necessary “why not?”


The practice of Feng Shui focuses initially on prevention rather than cure, so by activating the various areas in this way you are protecting what you already have and enhancing for further success in the future.
