FENG SHUI and MAIN DOOR

Having looked at the kitchen and the bedroom in our previous posts it is now time to focus on the main door, the third of the important areas in internal Feng Shui. 

In a previous post we discussed the Ming Tang (Bright Hall) and its effect on the Qi that enters your home, but what about the door itself.  It is the Qi Mouth of the home, the place where Qi enters.  Even when you and your family regularly enter through another door such as the door from the garage to the hallway, the main door still takes precedence.

Having the main door in an auspicious location, facing an auspicious direction based on Home and Personal Eight Mansions will benefit you and your family.  Calculate your personal Gua number. 

The main door and the facing direction of your property may not be the same.  The facing direction is concerned with the direction of maximum Qi and the main door is where Qi enters your home.  Ideally these two will go hand-in-hand however that is not always the case.

Many modern developments have the main door facing 45 degrees from the facing direction or directly opposite a neighbours door.  This may cause conflict between the residents.   It may be positioned such that it is facing a fence or a brick wall which effectively blocks any Qi from entering.  Another popular design is having the main door on an angle.  Like it or not this will very possibly create a sharp angle inside the home.

Ideally your main door, and by main door we mean the door that is used most often by the family, should be in proportion to the size of your property, it should be well maintained and welcoming.  The Qi as well as family and friends wants to feel uplifted when approaching your home. 

Being a Yang part of the home it should be supported by external features such as a road to activate its positive qualities.

When you open your main door looking out what do you see?  Is there a pylon; telegraph post; lamp post; sign post; decorative pillar; single tree; the edge of a neighbouring roofline directly opposite?  If there is and it is on the other side of a park or green area then it is not likely to be a negative feature.  However if it is close at hand it will affect the quality of Qi entering your home.

When you open your main door looking in what do you see?  Is there a staircase; a pillar; the door to a kitchen or toilet?  All these things will have an effect on the quality of Qi once it enters the property.

FENG SHUI and KITCHEN LOCATION

In Feng Shui your kitchen is one of the three most important areas, together with the main door and bedroom. 

The kitchen represents the health and wellbeing of the entire family yet it is best placed in an inauspicious sector based on Eight Mansions for the Home.  This also benefits the residents if it represents one of their inauspicious sectors based on Personal Eight Mansions.  Calculate your personal Gua number.

Why an inauspicious sector, shouldn't it be an auspicious sector when it is so important?

Because of its nature and use having the kitchen in an inauspicious sector will help suppress the negative energies created by an inauspicious sector.  If you have the choice and are able, positioning it in the Jue Ming (Total Loss) location will cushion you from the effects of this negative area.

It is also important to ensure that there is not too much Yang energy outside your kitchen.  Health and wellbeing for residents is supported by the mountain (sitting) star in Flying Stars Feng Shui and it is Yin (like a still unmoving mountain is Yin) and so if you have activity outside your kitchen window or Yang elements it will neutralise the benefit of a positive location inside.  These can be, but are certainly not limited to, a busy road, a well-used playground or school, an electricity pylon or a river.

Then moving on to the stove, or cooker.  Should this also be in an inauspicious sector within the kitchen?

The stove should be in an auspicious part of the kitchen, because it is this that provides the food for the family and ultimately affects their health.  In addition, the 'fire mouth' or point at which the heat is activated (in the picture right this is signified by the knobs) they should face a good direction.  It is beneficial if this represents the Sheng Qi (Good Fortune) direction of the breadwinner of the home.  When there are two of equal status then you can make the decision which direction you want to use.  This is especially important when two people belong to opposing groups - West or East Group.

When you have calculated your Gua number you can find your group based on your Gua number, together with your good and bad directions.

Feng Shui and 12 Chinese Astrological Animals

Is there a link between Feng Shui and the 12 Chinese Astrological Animals?  We are not talking about the Dragon, Tiger, Phoenix and Turtle known as the celestial animals of Feng Shui.  The celestial animals are associated with the external landscape and how it affects your living environment.

The Five Element Theory as well as the balance of Yin and Yang is fundamental to the effective practice of Feng Shui.  The productive, exhaustive and the destructive cycles of the Five Elements are a vital tool in determining the good, the bad and the ugly in your environment and your home.  Yin and Yang is what creates balance in an ideal situation.

On an individual level the Personal Eight Mansions from which you can calculate your personal Kua Number based on your year of birth also has Elements associated with it.  You have four good and four bad directions each with an Element.

The 12 Astrological Animals have elements associated with them together with either a Yin or a Yang aspect.

Each one of the 12 Chinese Astrological Animals resides in a 15⁰ sector around the compass.  Well that only covers 180⁰ in total so how does it work?  Do they follow consecutively around the compass?    

The Later Heaven arrangement of the Pa Kua (the eight-sided  symbol synonymous with Feng Shui) moves in a cyclical, seasonal pattern. 

The third month of each season is the transition point between seasons.  As an example; we are now in the Spring season in the Northern Hemisphere.  The Chinese solar calendar runs from 4 February each year making February the first month of Spring.  It also represents the Yang half of the Wood Element.  The Chinese Astrological Animal associated with February is Yang Tiger and its position around the compass is NE3 (52.5-67.5.) March signifies the Yin half of Wood and its animal is the Yin Rabbit.  Its home is E2 (82.5-97.5.)  April is another Yang month, the month of the Yang Dragon (112.5-127.5) but this time it is the Yang month of Earth; it is the transition month between Spring and the first month of Summer in May. 

There are four seasons and 12 Astrological Animals.  Two Wood (Yang Tiger and Yin Rabbit), two Fire (Yin Snake and Yang Horse), two Metal (Yang Monkey and Yin Rooster) and two Water (Yin Boar and Yang Rat.)  The four Earth elements sub-dividing each season are the two Yang (Dragon and Dog) and two Yin (Sheep and Ox) giving a total of 12.

To make it easier to follow, the two Yang Earth Animals are directly opposite each other on the compass (Dragon 112.5-127.5 and Dog 292.5-307.5) and the two Yin Earth Animals are directly opposite one another on the compass (Sheep 202.5-217.5 and Ox 22.5-37.5.)

So how else do the animals impact on Feng Shui?  Although termed ‘hours’ by the Chinese their hours translate as two Western hours.  Each of these 12 'hours' is identified by one of the animals, as follows:

03.00-04.59         Tiger

05.00-06.59         Rabbit

07.00-08.59         Dragon

09.00-10.59         Snake

11.00-12.59         Horse   

13.00.14.59         Goat

21.00-22.59         Pig

These hours have an influence on Chinese Astrology when calculating your birth chart. 

So while the practice of Feng Shui and the study of Chinese Astrology are independent and they stand alone; just like the Five Elements and Yin/Yang they are complementary and can be used together to enhance your life in a more complete and balanced way.

FENG SHUI and EIGHT MANSIONS-West Group

“If we are facing in the right direction, all we have to do is keep on walking”

Personal Eight Mansions is well-known in Feng Shui. Your date of birth identifies your Gua number which in turn identifies your four good and four bad locations.

 

Knowing the Eight Mansions of your home which takes into consideration the distribution of energy throughout the building will determine whether you and your home are meant for one another. 

Let us look this time at someone whose Gua number is 2 and who lives in a west group house.

The auspicious directions for a person with Gua Gumber 2 is northeast, west, northwest and southwest.

  

Their inauspicious directions are east, southeast, south and north.

When this person lives in a Kun house which faces northeast (22.5^o to 67.5^o) and sits southwest (202.5^o to 247.5^o) they are totally in harmony with their west group home.  During the current period of 8 this is a most auspicious combination and while not ideal can also benefit those belonging to the east group as long as the internal layout is designed based on their positive locations.

For someone with Gua number 2 this is an ideal layout as the facing direction matches their most auspicious direction; their health direction (west); longevity and relationship (northwest) and personal growth (southwest) harmonise perfectly. 

This also means their four inauspicious locations are in the same locations.

This sounds very good, however as with houses facing and sitting in different groups, the internal layout is all important.   The main door is obviously auspicious although it does not automatically follow that the living, sleeping and kitchen areas are equally positive.

  

Remembering that location is more important than direction, three of the four auspicious locations are the northwest, west and southwest.  The living and sleeping areas would ideally be located in one or more of these sectors.  The kitchen would be best located in the east or the southeast.  In Feng Shui it is generally recommended that the kitchen a) is not located in the centre of the home (this is said to signify damaging family harmony) and b) is not located towards the front of the home (the kitchen is a source of wealth to the family and is better hidden deep within the building to protect the good fortune of the family.)

Another consideration is the key things in your life at the moment.  If your career is all-consuming the front of your house is important to care for.  Do you have a bright hall outside your front door?  Do you have a clean, clear and bright space inside your front door making it welcoming and auspicious?

If health is important then you will benefit from a bedroom in the west.  If longevity, love and relationships are important then having your living room and bedroom in the northwest will bring positive energy to you.  Personal growth is an ongoing process whatever stage of your life you are going through.  We are always learning and growing.  If you have a home study or office the southwest will benefit you.

If the layout of your home is such that it is impossible to tap the ideal locations it becomes vital to ensure you face an auspicious direction in an inauspicious location.   Another thing to consider is the direction your living room, study or office, bedroom and kitchen doors face.  Having them face one of your auspicious directions is bringing positive energy into the room each time the door is opened and closed.
