FENG SHUI and KITCHEN LOCATION

In Feng Shui your kitchen is one of the three most important areas, together with the main door and bedroom.
The kitchen represents the health and wellbeing of the entire family yet it is best placed in an inauspicious sector based on Eight Mansions for the Home.  This also benefits the residents if it represents one of their inauspicious sectors based on Personal Eight Mansions.  Calculate your personal Gua number.
Why an inauspicious sector, shouldn't it be an auspicious sector when it is so important?
Because of its nature and use having the kitchen in an inauspicious sector will help suppress the negative energies created by an inauspicious sector.  If you have the choice and are able, positioning it in the Jue Ming (Total Loss) location will cushion you from the effects of this negative area.
It is also important to ensure that there is not too much Yang energy outside your kitchen.  Health and wellbeing for residents is supported by the mountain (sitting) star in Flying Stars Feng Shui and it is Yin (like a still unmoving mountain is Yin) and so if you have activity outside your kitchen window or Yang elements it will neutralise the benefit of a positive location inside.  These can be, but are certainly not limited to, a busy road, a well-used playground or school, an electricity pylon or a river.
Then moving on to the stove, or cooker.  Should this also be in an inauspicious sector within the kitchen?

The stove should be in an auspicious part of the kitchen, because it is this that provides the food for the family and ultimately affects their health.  In addition, the 'fire mouth' or point at which the heat is activated (in the picture right this is signified by the knobs) they should face a good direction.  It is beneficial if this represents the Sheng Qi (Good Fortune) direction of the breadwinner of the home.  When there are two of equal status then you can make the decision which direction you want to use.  This is especially important when two people belong to opposing groups - West or East Group.
When you have calculated your Gua number you can find your group based on your Gua number, together with your good and bad directions.
We have looked at two different Feng Shui methods here, Eight Mansions (Home and Personal) and Flying Stars.  A consultant will likely use these, as well as other Feng Shui methods when conducting an audit.  The Four Pillars Chart for each resident (also known as BaZi) will highlight many aspects of your life including health and wellbeing.

Feng Shui and Yin/Yang

Lao Tse (Laozi) said to be the founder of Taoism, lived during the Zhou Dynasty.  In his works, Tao Te Ching he wrote “knowing the ancient beginning is the essence of the Way.”

The ancient beginnings of the ‘ten thousand things’, the primordial force that makes up all that is, and said to incorporate everything in Heaven and Earth was known as Wu Ji.  It was first expressed as a circle, having no beginning and no end; incorporating the limitless nature of the universe and emptiness at the same time.

Through an ongoing study of the heavens and earth this circle (this Wu Ji) transformed into the Tai Chi; the Yin/Yang symbol so familiar today.

The Tai Chi represents a delicate balance of Yin (dark) and Yang (light) each of which has the seed of its opposite within.  They are inter-dependent; one cannot exist without the other and they are constantly in motion.

When Yin is at its height, Yang is at its lowest and vice versa.  Our world is made up of this constant flow through the seasons of the year; day and night; sun and moon; heaven and earth.

Heaven is Yang energy, it is the height of summer, it is the sun and daylight.

Yang Chi can be either young or old.  Young Yang is fresh vibrant energy, a strong and powerful attracting energy bringing with it good fortune and a positive outlook.   It is the energy you attract when you open windows and doors to invite the positive energy of the natural world into your home and workplace.

Old Yang is stale, it is exhausted and tired Chi.  Old Yang is caused by a build up of clutter, it manifests in rooms rarely used that has little new energy brought in from outdoors.  This is the Yang that can easily become Yin if it is not refreshed.

Earth is Yin energy, it is the height of the winter season, it is the moon and night.

When a home is constantly quiet and left empty for long periods of time, it becomes still and attracts what is known as ‘Yin spirit formation.’  It has a dull and lethargic feel with little power to invite anything positive.  It is lacking in the light, sound and movement necessary to attract good fortune.  To create anything positive, Chi has to be kept moving.

To attract good fortune invite an abundant supply of Yang energy into your space.  Every home will reflect the moods, attitudes and health of the occupants and if they are constantly moody, despondent and lethargic because of a lack of positive Chi, they will be prone to illness and unhappiness at every turn.

Yang Chi should be encouraged to meander and move through your home like the flow of a river.  When its path is blocked the Chi will become Yin and when it moves too quickly it creates killing Chi; a harmful Chi that will make you feel  uncomfortable in your own space.  You and your family may end up spending more time away from the home than in it.

Yin and Yang is constantly changing in the natural world and your home will sense this change and respond accordingly.  So remembering the ‘wind’ and ‘water’ that is Feng Shui make changes in your home in response to the seasons and you will achieve a sense of harmony; a balance of Yin and Yang.

Feng Shui and the Lo-Shu Grid 7-9

Continuing on with numbers and elements around the compass from seven to nine.

Remember all odd numbers represent yang energies and all even numbers represent yin energies even when the area itself may be the opposite.

When energising locations around the compass you can be imaginative when using symbolic Feng Shui.  Use the number of the area to decide the number of enhancers you place there.  For example; 1 water feature, 2 crystal hearts, 3 plants.  Whether you live in a traditional, modern or contemporary home; whether you like lots of trinkets on display or a minimalist design you can still incorporate symbolic enhancements for each area with careful thought and planning.  These do not have to be oriental, they can be western symbols associated with each aspiration.

Number Seven (7) – The number of the west and the youngest daughter (Tui) this is the small metal area.  The number 7 Red Star in the practice of Flying Star Feng Shui is currently an inauspicious number connected to violence and robbery; anything connected with metal.  However, particularly in the western world it is historically a lucky number.  It is also a lucky number for anyone who has it as their Kua number.  7 is said to be a number relating to wisdom.  Seeing it on a regular basis is an indication that you should be focusing on your goals and not be diverted from your ultimate aim.  Doing this will ensure you will succeed.  The west is also the area relating to the family, to descendants luck.

Number Eight (8) – The auspicious number 8 is an indicator of wealth and prosperity coming in to the home when it is correctly enhanced.  Its location is the small earth area of the northeast, the area of Ken (the youngest son of the family.)  It is the education and study luck location.  Because of its similarity with the infinity symbol, or interlinking rings, the number 8 is a cyclical number indicating a recurrence of positive experiences.  It will also bring good fortune to the youngest son of the home as well as any member of the family undertaking further education or learning of any kind in college, university or in a work situation.

Number Nine (9) – Nine is a number which signifies completion.  It is a magnifying number and this suggests that a double 9 will multiply the good fortune associated with this auspicious number.  Its home is the south, a part of the home that represents fame and recognition.  It is the area of the middle daughter (Li) and when properly enhanced the south will bring good fortune to all the family but more specifically, the daughters, the females of the family.  When the number 9 appears on a regular basis it is an indicator to be confident in your ventures with assurance of their ultimate success.  The fire element is associated with the south as is the majestic horse. You can also introduce plants into the area to feed the fire of success.  Take care of this important number, a number that can neither be destroyed or changed to bring your desires to ultimate fruition.
