Feng Shui Auspicious Numbers

The numbers one to nine in Feng Shui are identified by colours, one of the Five Elements and individual meanings.  As well as appearing around the points of the compass as determined by the original Lo Shu Grid, they also reside in the constellation of the Big Dipper; Ursa Major.

The most auspicious numbers in Feng Shui are always the White Stars 1, 6 and 8.  This indicates a link between the Magic Ratio of 1:1.618 and the White Stars.

White Stars

Number Eight (8) We are currently in period eight of Flying Star Feng Shui and this means the number eight star is shining at its brightest from 2004-2024.  Always a lucky number much sought after in the Far East, its strength increases during this current period and when activated correctly has the potential to invite great good fortune.

The original compass location for this white star is the northeast which is also the location of the youngest son of the family.  Your youngest son can benefit greatly from activating this number.

To take full advantage of this earth element number, which is located in the centre of the period eight Lo Shu Grid; the centre of your home; infuse your home with light (which enhances earth,) sound and movement. Enhance your home, especially the centre, with the earth colours of ochre, pale yellow and shades of brown to infuse your space with the strength of this most auspicious of stars.

Avoid an excess of the metal element in the northeast and the centre as metal weakens the element of earth.

 Number One (1) Represents water and water means money, or wealth gained from your career

This star is second behind the number 8 because in Flying Star Feng Shui it will return to the centre from 2044-2064 when it will become a powerful and auspicious star to activate.

As it appears at the beginning of the 180-year Flying Star cycle the number one is said to represent new beginnings and new opportunities.

The original compass location for the number one white star is the north.  This is the location of the middle son.  When this star appears in its original location of the north the middle son will benefit and when he is working may well result in increased income coming from his chosen career.

Enhancing the north with water or metallic objects is auspicious (metal creates water in the Five Elements.)  Avoid placing earth element objects in the north as earth destroys water in the Five Elements.

Number Six (6) Is a metal element star and its original location in the Lo Shu Grid is the northwest.  In Flying Stars Feng Shui this number is furthest away from where we are now so its effects are weakened.  However the northwest is the area of the trigram Chien, the male, Heaven and Mentor. 

Chien and the metal element of the area signifies gold, riches and prosperity.  When this number ‘flies’ into its northwest home it represents good fortune for the man of the house. 

Enhancing this area with big metal, the big metal of our modern day technology such as televisions, games consoles, music systems, creates sound and movement and keeping the area light and bright will activate the power of this important star.  Just a word of caution, while the area should be bright, excessive bright lights or worse still, fire, are to be avoided.  Fire destroys metal in the Five Elements and this would cause any good fortune to go up in smoke.

The northwest of your home will also benefit from being painted white which is the ultimate Yang colour incorporating as it does all the other colours of the spectrum.  White is also one of the colours of the area along with grey, gold and bronze, metallic colours that will activate the positive features of the area.

Magic Ratio in the Office

The Magic Ratio of Feng Shui is exactly the same as the Golden Ratio; the Golden Rectangle or the Golden Mean.

 

Historically in the West it has been incorporated into the design of buildings such as the Parthenon in Athens, the Taj Mahal in India and the Great Pyramid in Egypt. 

In Feng Shui terms all of these structures are Yin (still) Energy as they were built as either temples (in the case of the Parthenon) or burial chambers (The Taj Mahal and the Great Pyramid.)

  

However, as they are also a link with the heavens, by conforming to the 1:1.618 rectangle they were auspicious for their purpose and their external appearance is an attraction for millions of visitors each year.

 

This is borne out by the fascination that these structures have held for many generations past and will no doubt remain so for many generations to come.

Yang Feng Shui is concerned with the living, breathing world; with life and activity, with light and sound and with shapes and colour.

 

It is for this reason that using the Magic Ratio to create an auspicious and harmonious home will, by extension, create a happy home.

It is for this reason that using the Magic Ratio to create a productive and  flourishing business space will, by extension, create a profitable business, complete with happy and dedicated staff.

When you have your own office building, Hotel or even Restaurant, the first thing your clients will see is the foyer area or entrance.  In Feng Shui terms this section should be inviting and welcoming.  Ensure it is well lit, clean, clear and tidy creating a feeling of positive expectation for the visitor.  This is an area that will benefit from having each of the Five Elements present.

It is important however to remember scale, so if the space is small the décor and fittings should be chosen with care to maximise the dimensions without compromising on the attraction of positive energy.

Enhancing this area by utilising the Magic Ratio of 1:1.618 will invite positive Chi to enter and gather harmoniously before flowing through the rest of the building in a gentle and meandering way.

The staff in this area will be positively influenced by the effects of the Magic Ratio and they will greet your visitors and guests in a welcoming way making them instantly feel comfortable and important.

Flooring can be laid to demarcate the space and colour on the walls can mirror this. Place a seating area within the Magic Ratio in proportion to the size of the foyer to create unity.

When renovating or updating your office space, Hotel or Restaurant, aim to create auspicious spaces according to the Magic Ratio.  Not only will this attract success in your business endeavours, the benefits of creating these inviting areas will also ensure your employees are happier, work better and are more committed to supporting the business and its positive growth.

  

It will create a harmonious and productive working environment and invite endless opportunities.

Feng Shui and the Magic Ratio-Home and Garden

Magic Ratio in the Home

The Magic Ratio as it is known in Feng Shui or the Golden Ratio, as it is probably more commonly known in the West is said to appeal to the human psyche making shapes and living environments that conform to this 1:1.618 rectangle harmonious and auspicious.

So what has this to do with Feng Shui? 

The simple answer is that this Magic Ratio, when used in room layout creates an instant auspicious and open feel.

If you have a long narrow room, such as may be present in a traditional Victorian style property using the proportions of the Magic Ratio to lay out the space you spend most of your time in will invite a feeling of harmony and optimism.  The area will instantly appear brighter and more spacious.

Even in a small space this Ratio will open up the area making it feel more user-friendly and roomy.

Obstacles or blocks to your success will also begin to disappear inviting positive results into all your endeavours.

  

Using the Magic Ratio is your living and sleeping areas will instantly create a feeling of wellbeing.  Any space ‘left over’ can be separated with wall or floor covering, a piece of furniture, a screen; anything that will create the divide.

By measuring the length and width of a room and multiplying the results by 1.618 the answer will identify exactly what length the room should be.

For example if your living space is 18 feet wide multiply that by 1.618 and the answer = 29.124 feet.  Ideally your space should be demarcated 18 x 29.124 feet.

In an open plan living space whether a home or an apartment this Magic Ratio can be used to great effect to separate the various areas to create harmony throughout.

On a smaller scale placing a family photograph in a frame that reflects the Magic Ratio is incredibly auspicious as is the presence of a mirror with these proportions.  Dining or coffee tables, side tables,  hall tables; will also prove effective and propitious.

Magic Ratio in the Garden

Just as in your living and sleeping spaces, regardless of the size of your garden, the Magic Ratio can be used to bring a sense of space and sanctuary to your outside room.

If you are fortunate enough to have a large outdoor space you can create more than one of these Magic Ratio ‘rooms’ and use each one for a different purpose; for family and social space or for quiet and meditative space.

The Magic Ratio of 1:1.618 can be separated from other areas by planting hedges or erecting trellis with plants growing over it to provide screening and privacy.

Within the Magic Ratio you can arrange your outdoor furniture in auspicious Feng Shui configurations just as you would in your living area to invite harmony into the space.

A well-maintained garden will always invite auspicious Feng Shui and by incorporating this with the Magic Ratio you can make it into a space that will ooze Sheng Chi (auspicious energy.)  Remember, the quality of Chi that enters your home whether from the front or back will only ever be as good as the quality of your outside space.

It is both satisfying and auspicious to make the effort to attract auspicious Chi, and in addition, having effectively turned your garden into one, or many, outdoor rooms expands your living space and being as one with the natural world.

If you live in an apartment and you have a balcony, you can still use this principle and place growing plants and flowers to activate the space as well as a seating area if you have the space.  This is a very effective method of maximizing your Feng Shui in a limited space.

Feng Shui and the Magic Ratio

There are three auspicious White Stars in Feng Shui practice and these are 1, 6 and 8.

The number 1 White Star is a Water Star which represents career wealth and is the Star of the North

The number 6 White Star is a Metal Star which represents heaven and is the Star of the Northwest

The number 8 White Star is an Earth Star which represents hidden prosperity and abundance and is the Star of the Northeast

When they appear in certain areas specifically, they bring with them auspicious indications.

In the North, the East (Wood) and the Southeast (Wood) the number 1 Water Star invites wealth luck and enhancing these areas with Water features will activate the luck.

In the West (Metal), the Northwest (Metal) and the North the number 6 Metal Star invites luck from heaven, mentor luck and good fortune for the man of the house.  Enhancing these areas with all-Metal wind chimes will activate this luck.

In the Northeast (Earth), the Southwest (Earth), the West and the Northwest, the number 8 Earth Star invites hidden prosperity and abundance and activating these areas with Earth element objects, particularly the large variety of crystals available, will bring good fortune.  Placing Earth element objects in the centre of the home, when the number 8 White Star ‘flies’ in will benefit all members of the family.

In addition to their auspicious Feng Shui associations these three numbers are also representative of the Magic Ratio which is 1:1.618.

You may be more familiar with the ‘Golden Ratio’ which is identified as 1.6180339887.

This Golden Ratio is said to identify proportions which when represented as a rectangle 1:1.618 is most pleasing to the human eye.  It is also possible to cut a square out of the rectangle with these proportions and the remaining rectangle will remain 1:1.618.

This Ratio is said to have been used by Leonardo da Vinci when he painted the Mona Lisa, although there is no written evidence from the artist to support this.  It was used by the Greeks in Athens when building the Parthenon; by the Egyptians when constructing the Great Pyramid of Khufu in Giza and in the construction of the Taj Mahal in India. 

All of these works of art and beauty have stood the test of time enthralling and fascinating man from the time they were erected to the present day and this fascination shows no sign of waning anytime soon.

The image of Vitruvian Man by Leonardo da Vinci incorporating the pentangle suggests there is a relationship between the human body and the Golden Ratio.

The composer Debussy used this Ratio in his music and Le Corbusier, following the example of Da Vinci, used it in his architecture.  He was one of the pioneers of modern architecture. The Villa Stein in Garches France, built by Le Corbusier in 1927 resembles the Golden Rectangle.

Fibonacci numbers are also closely connected with the Golden Ratio.

The appeal of this proportion to the eye and brain has been tested scientifically.  Tests, going as far back as the 19^th Century, show that, when presented with a range of rectangles of differing sizes, people will invariably choose those whose sides are in harmony with the Golden Ratio.

Pythagoras, the Greek mathematician, called this Ratio ‘the Golden Mean’ or ‘the Golden Rectangle.’

In nature the spirals of the conch shell and the petals of certain flowers such as the sunflower all correspond to the Golden Mean.

Whatever it is called, and as you can see there are many variations, the 1:1.618 remains enigmatic and fascinating.
