Red Phoenix in the Landscape

In Feng Shui practice the Red Phoenix is described as the immortal celestial creature of the South which symbolises the power of the Sun.  When able to fly it represents new opportunities, fame and recognition; of flying high in your life and your career. 

  

As well as being one of the four celestial creatures of Feng Shui, it is recorded in Greek mythology and described as having a long life and being repeatedly reborn from the ashes of its predecessor.  There are also writings saying that Ancient Egyptians worshipped the Bennu, a solar bird similar to the Phoenix of Greek mythology.  This is sometimes depicted as a heron, a yellow wagtail or an eagle with feathers of red and gold.

William Shakespeare the renowned English Poet and Playwright often mentioned the Phoenix in plays, such as Henry VIII.  He also wrote a poem entitled ‘The Phoenix and the Turtle.’

The celestial Yang Red Phoenix of Feng Shui is present in the environment when there is a wide open space, known as a ‘bright hall’ or ‘ming tang’ in front of your home.  This can be your front garden, a field or a park, anywhere open that allows Chi to gather.  It should be level or only very slightly lower than your home. Land directly in front that is higher than your home suggests a blockage in your life. 

A ming tang allows positive Chi to accumulate before entering your home.  When there is a ‘footstool’ to take off from it represents the Phoenix being able to spread its wings and soar high into the air.  The footstool in your garden can be a small mound of Earth in front; it is a symbolic representation of you being able to ‘put your feet up’ and life a life of comfort and luxury.  Covering the mound with red flowers will further emphasise the symbolism of the Phoenix.

Red Phoenix in the Home

Being the celestial creature of the sun, the location of the Phoenix is the South, the place of maximum Yang Energy in the summer sky.  It is the place of the middle daughter of the family and the trigram LI.  This trigram has one solid Yang line above and one solid Yang line below a central broken Yin line signifying the appearance of a hard outer shell (Yang) with a soft and yielding centre (Yin.)  It suggests lightning; a flash of electrical Yang Energy in the sky above.  It also represents all the elements of a hot summer season; sunshine and light, heat and parched Earth.

The element of the South is Fire, an upward Energy that has the potential to nurture and warm yet cause devastation if allowed to spread out of control.   This is the location to focus on if you desire fame and recognition in your chosen career.  Whether you seek worldwide fame; fame in your particular passion or recognition in your chosen career decorating or accessorising the South with the colours red or orange will help activate the area.  Ensure there is plenty of light and add the enhancing element of Wood in the form of Yang Wood plants and flowers or Yin Wood furniture and decorative items to help activate positive Chi in this area.

Magic Ratio in the Office

The Magic Ratio of Feng Shui is exactly the same as the Golden Ratio; the Golden Rectangle or the Golden Mean.

 

Historically in the West it has been incorporated into the design of buildings such as the Parthenon in Athens, the Taj Mahal in India and the Great Pyramid in Egypt. 

In Feng Shui terms all of these structures are Yin (still) Energy as they were built as either temples (in the case of the Parthenon) or burial chambers (The Taj Mahal and the Great Pyramid.)

  

However, as they are also a link with the heavens, by conforming to the 1:1.618 rectangle they were auspicious for their purpose and their external appearance is an attraction for millions of visitors each year.

 

This is borne out by the fascination that these structures have held for many generations past and will no doubt remain so for many generations to come.

Yang Feng Shui is concerned with the living, breathing world; with life and activity, with light and sound and with shapes and colour.

 

It is for this reason that using the Magic Ratio to create an auspicious and harmonious home will, by extension, create a happy home.

It is for this reason that using the Magic Ratio to create a productive and  flourishing business space will, by extension, create a profitable business, complete with happy and dedicated staff.

When you have your own office building, Hotel or even Restaurant, the first thing your clients will see is the foyer area or entrance.  In Feng Shui terms this section should be inviting and welcoming.  Ensure it is well lit, clean, clear and tidy creating a feeling of positive expectation for the visitor.  This is an area that will benefit from having each of the Five Elements present.

It is important however to remember scale, so if the space is small the décor and fittings should be chosen with care to maximise the dimensions without compromising on the attraction of positive energy.

Enhancing this area by utilising the Magic Ratio of 1:1.618 will invite positive Chi to enter and gather harmoniously before flowing through the rest of the building in a gentle and meandering way.

The staff in this area will be positively influenced by the effects of the Magic Ratio and they will greet your visitors and guests in a welcoming way making them instantly feel comfortable and important.

Flooring can be laid to demarcate the space and colour on the walls can mirror this. Place a seating area within the Magic Ratio in proportion to the size of the foyer to create unity.

When renovating or updating your office space, Hotel or Restaurant, aim to create auspicious spaces according to the Magic Ratio.  Not only will this attract success in your business endeavours, the benefits of creating these inviting areas will also ensure your employees are happier, work better and are more committed to supporting the business and its positive growth.

FENG SHUI and Rooms

The rooms and their placement in the overall layout of your home will play a large part in determining the quality of the Chi Energy created.

In the practice of Feng Shui the following are preferred locations for your main rooms: 

• Your living room is considered the social area in your home and is best located near the front

This is your entertainment area and is the place where family and friends gather to socialise, making its location the public area of your home.  It is one of the areas that will benefit from lots of Yang energy to make it a lively, vibrant and welcoming room. 

Remember that balance is all important so some elements of Yin are required to avoid making it an unsettling place to spend time.  The occupants will create their own Yang energy which will contribute to the overall feel of the room.

• Your dining room is known as the heart of the home and benefits from being in or near the centre

The dining room is a family area and if it is in or near the centre of your home and is used often it has the effect of keeping the family united – as the saying goes “the family who eats together, stays together.”

If it is not possible to house your dining room in the centre it is better to have it towards the back of the home.  To the Chinese an abundance of food is wealth so keeping the table away from the front of the house will ensure the wealth is kept in the home.

Lifestyles today tend to prevent families from eating together on a regular basis however for the well-being of the family as a whole it is important to eat together at least once a week to maintain a happy and healthy family life.

• Your kitchen is best towards the back of your home

It also benefits the parents if it is located in one of their inauspicious locations based on their Kua number.  This is particularly important for the breadwinner of the family to ensure their good fortune is not lost.

Having the source of the energy from the cooker or stove coming from an auspicious direction for the breadwinner will invite positive Chi.

• Your master bedroom is best if it is not above the kitchen, the garage or a bathroom

Above the kitchen (and more particularly over a cooker or oven) this has the effect of ‘burning’ any good fortune; above a garage,  particularly one that is either rarely used or houses boxes and junk rather than the family car/s, signifies a lack of support for a sleeping couple;  above a bathroom sends negative energies to the bedroom.

It is also important to have more Yin than Yang in the bedroom to ensure you can rest.  Working, exercising or watching television in the bedroom before sleep creates too much Yang energy and as a result makes it difficult to rest and refresh the body, mind and spirit ready for another day.
