The controlling cycle in Feng Shui is sometimes called the 'destructive' cycle. However control is a more accurate way of describing the process. Bringing Yin and Yang into the picture it becomes clear that not all Fire can 'destroy' Metal and not all Metal can 'destroy' Wood. It is also not always a bad thing; too much of any one element prevents harmony.
Wood is the only one
of the Five Elements that has a life of its own. It is a living,
breathing element and in its growing form it is known in Feng Shui as Yang
Wood.
Metal tools and machinery
are used to cut down trees. This could
be said to be the worst of the ‘destructive’ forces as Metal is destroying a
living organism. Therefore Metal
destroys Wood.
Once cut Wood has no life, it will no longer grow and therefore becomes Yin. It is
this Wood that is transformed with Metal tools and machinery into objects like furniture,
flooring and decorative items, even homes.
As well as practical
objects, Metal machinery also transforms Yin Wood into paper. Paper is then formed,
among many other things, into a major form of currency exchanged throughout the
world, that of paper money.
Wood weakens Earth
Without this base to
hold, sustain and feed it, Wood could not exist. Whether it is a large and stately tree, the
rampant bamboo, colourful and varied flowers or grasses, their roots penetrate
the soft Yin Earth and weaken its solid structure. Therefore Wood weakens
Earth.
However, if these
roots did not snake their way through the Earth and loosen its solid texture,
rain Water falling onto Earth would stay on its surface and we would probably
end up living in a waterworld.
It is because the root
structure of Wood loosens the Earth that Water is able to drain through. This goes full circle
as the Water absorbed by the Earth feeds the growing Wood which penetrates the
Earth and the cycle begins again.
Water covers something
like two-thirds of our world. The solid
rock core beneath the Water acts as a bowl. Living Wood spreads
its roots through the Earth and this enables the Water falling as rain to be
drawn into the Earth. Yang Earth, the
Earth of mountains, boulders and large rocks hold back flowing Water preventing
it from flooding the land. Therefore Earth controls
Water.
As living beings Water
is essential to our well-being.
It is because Yin Earth
can absorb this vital element that plants grow.
The plants in their turn absorb negative energies from the air and give
out positive Energy in return, allowing us to thrive. The Earth allows us to
grow food to feed our families and our animals; all this is only possible
because it first soaks up Water which nourishes and enriches it. Without the Earth absorbing
Water, Wood could not grow and so much of what we value in this world would not
exist.
All Five of the
Elements of Water, Wood, Fire, Earth and Metal are a gift from Heaven; they
each play their part in making our natural World the beauty it is.
However, as with
anything in our lives it is the use we make of these elements that ultimately
decides the effect they have on our existence.
