FENG SHUI - GEN and DUI

The two youngest members Gen (son) and Dui (daughter) are the final trigrams of the family represented by the Ba Gua.
In the Early Heaven Ba Gua Gen is in the Northwest and Dui is in the Southeast.  In the Later Heaven Ba Gua Gen is in the Northeast and Dui is in the West.
In the Early Heaven Arrangement Gen in the Northwest is the Mountain sitting directly opposite Dui, the Marsh or Lake located in the Southeast; static state of perfection.
The Later Heaven Arrangement moves Gen to the Northeast and Dui to the West.  Gen is the element of Earth and it is the trigram of the Mountain; it signifies the transition of the seasons from Winter to Spring.  Winter Earth is cold and hard with little growth; it is waiting.  Dui is the element of Metal and it is the trigram representing a lake or marsh.  This is the Autumn season when the earth is cooling in preparation for its season of rest and rejuvenation.
GEN ()
Gen is the youngest son of the family.  The Gua of Gen is two broken Yin lines below a solid Yang line.  It represents the stillness and stability of the Mountain.  It also signifies hidden strength and a hidden storehouse;  think the metal element that is hidden deep within the mountain waiting to be discovered.  It also signifies a period of waiting and can indicate someone with a stubborn streak to their nature.
The Gua number of the Northeast is 8 and its colour is brown or ochre.
Within the body this trigram represents the backbone, nose and sinuses, fingers and toes.  A missing Northeast corner in the home will negatively affect the youngest son.  A negative external feature in the Northeast can also have a detrimental effect on the wellbeing of Gen during certain years.
DUI ()
Dui is the youngest daughter.  This Gua is made up of two Yang lines supporting a broken Yin line at the top.  It represents joy and celebration.
The Gua number of the West is Metal 7 and its colour is white or silver. This is the fine Metal of coins and jewellery; that valued for its beauty and desirability.
In the body Dui Gua represents the mouth, throat and voice.  A missing West corner or a harmful external feature will negatively affect the youngest daughter of the family.

Feng Shui and Flying Stars (Xuan Kong Fei Xing Formula)

So what are Flying Stars in the context of Feng Shui?  Flying Star Feng Shui or Xuan Kong Fei Xing is one of the more advanced Formulas of Feng Shui.  'Xuan' means time; 'Kong' means space and 'Fei Xing' refers to the cyclic changes of time and space.  Flying Stars focuses on the dimensions of time and space and how universal energy is constantly in motion.
Flying Star Feng Shui encompasses the Five Elements of Water, Wood, Fire, Earth and Metal, balance of Yin and Yang, and the original numbers of the Lo Shu Grid (1-9) as well as the eight Trigrams and 24 Mountains.
There are nine 20-year Flying Star periods resulting in one complete cycle of 180 years.  Each period has different associations and meanings.  We are currently in period 8 (2004-2023) which is an Earth period.  Period 7, a Metal Star whose home location is the West, representing the youngest daughter (Dui) and the lake, placed focus on accumulating wealth.  As an Earth Star period 8 signifies a change in energy to one of creating stability, nurturing and support.   Its home location is the Northeast,  representing the youngest son (Gen) and the mountain as well as the number 8, a White Star signifying current wealth.  The number 7 is a Red Star, auspicious during period 7 and extremely inauspicious during period 8 reverting to its natural state as a Star of Violence and Robbery.
There is a Flying Star Chart for each individual home.  This Chart identifies the Qi of the property on completion and moving in date.  So any home built and completed between 1964-1983 is a period 6 home; any home built and completed between 1984 and 2003 is a period 7 home and any home built and completed between 2004 and any time up to 2023 is a period 8 home.  This Chart has a Base Star in the centre of each of the nine grids as well as a Facing and Sitting Star for each sector.  The Facing Star sits in the top right hand corner and it represents career and wealth.  The Sitting Star sits in the top left hand corner of a sector and it represents individuals and health.
During our current period 8, and regardless of the period when the home was completed, identifying where the number 8 Facing and Sitting Stars are located and activating them can help the occupants with their desires and aspirations.  Forgetting to do this and continuing to activate the number 7 Star will have negative consequences for the residents of a property.
In addition to the Flying Star Chart of a home there are annual, monthly and daily Flying Stars.  These 'fly' from sector to sector in a set pattern which is known as the Lo-Shu Path.

FENG SHUI and MISSING CORNERS-Family

As well as the Eight Aspirations each of the four primary and four secondary corners of the Lo-Shu grid relate to members of the family.

Last time we highlighted the importance of the Northwest and Southwest and their effect on the male and the female (the mother and father) of the home.  Now we will complete the family picture and discover who will be impacted by missing corners in the remaining six locations.

East                        The East is the location of the eldest son, the Dragon of the family.  This is the best place to locate the bedroom for your first son to thrive.  When missing it will make it difficult for him to grow; an important point in this big wood area of the Pa Kua.  As well as the eldest son this could easily refer to a young protégé in the business world and when the area is missing in the home it will seriously affect his path up the corporate ladder.

Southeast           This is the location of the eldest daughter of the family.  She represents the wind which brings positive energy into the area, helping her thrive.  Her positive growth will be seriously depleted if this corner is missing.  In a business environment she will struggle to be heard if she lacks the support of the southeast at home.

South                    Your middle daughter will benefit from a bedroom located in this area.  The south is the fire area relating to fame, recognition and a place in the limelight.  Your middle daughter will not be overlooked at home or at work when she spends time in this location.  When it is missing she will be seen but not heard and her natural exuberance will be suppressed.

West                     The West is the corner of the youngest daughter.  Nestled safely between the locations of the mother (Southwest) and father (Northwest) she represents the lake and when this corner is not missing she is well cared for and nurtured.  A missing corner in the West however will not only affect the wellbeing of the youngest daughter it will also impact family harmony.

North                    Your middle son will be adversely affected when the North corner is missing.  This is the area of water and is connected to career and a constant flow of money.  All working members of the family will feel the negative impact if the area is missing.

Northeast           The Northeast relates to the youngest son.  Having a bedroom in this area will help him thrive at school and beyond.  The area of personal growth is important to ensure there is no lack of focus when studying and learning.  This small earth area signifying the mountain will provide solid support when it is present; however when it is missing direction and focus is uncertain.

Depending on the size of your family missing corners may not have any negative effect; if you only have one son then the East is the important area and the North/Northeast will not have a significant impact.  They will however impact the aspiration associated with those areas.  Missing corners in the Big Tai Chi of your home will always have a negative effect on some aspect of life.  The Small Tai Chi will then take on greater importance.  Determine the aspiration, or aspirations, you seek to achieve and then locate your main door or your living area in that corner of your home.  Your front door will activate positive energy each time it is used and spending lots of time in the living area will activate positive energy and attract positive experiences.  Your personal impact will also play a large part in achieving success, whether it be in finding the job of your dreams, your ideal partner (work or personal) or gaining recognition and receiving acknowledgement for your endeavours.

Your Career using Feng Shui

As you saw in A – Auspicious Aspirations, one of the Eight Aspirations in Feng Shui focuses on Career Luck.

Its universal direction is the North, which is a Water element area.

This is the place to focus your attention, in your home or office, if career is important to you.

If you are starting out on your career path, having a Mentor, either outside the home or someone older in your family, to support and encourage you, can give you a head start.

The Northwest is the area relating to Mentor Luck and fortuitously it is the area known as Big Metal.

In the Five Elements of Feng Shui Metal ‘creates’ Water, so activating the North with metallic objects is auspicious.

The Northwest is the area of the male and it is also known as ‘Heaven’s Gate.’

By activating the North with elements relating to this Yang masculine area you are inviting the positive Chi Energy of heaven necessary to give you a helping hand on your career path.

Metal is a Yang element, so displaying wind chimes in the North will invite lots of Yang Energy. A six-rod hollow metal wind chime is the most auspicious (six is the number of the Northwest, of heaven.)

You can also house your television or music centre here.  Plenty of Yang Chi Energy will invite plenty of support.

In addition, enhancing the area with the element of the North, which is Yang Water, invites lots of positive Chi Energy into the space.

The Water must be Yang (moving Water) and a perfect combination of the Northwest and the North is a six-tier water feature in your home (six is the number of the Northwest; one is the number of the North.)  The Water should be falling towards you and not away from you otherwise any good fortune created by the water feature is going elsewhere.

One major taboo to avoid:  Water is extremely inauspicious when displayed in a bedroom, so if you live in an apartment and the North is your bedroom then the best solution is to display the image of a Turtle or a Tortoise instead.

The turtle provides support so in an ideal situation will be behind you.  However, as long as it is in the North it will work its magic.   Please, bear in mind - no Water in the bedroom - ever!

To complete our exploration of the areas of the North, the Northeast is the universal area relating to Education and Study Luck (to personal development) and in a new career this is also an area important to the positive development of your future.

The Northeast is an Earth area.  Enhancing with Earth elements and light (Fire) will activate the luck of personal development.

An auspicious image is the crystal globe, or a globe made with precious and semi-precious gemstones.  This is especially relevant if your business or career is international.

In addition, light (Fire in the Five Elements) enhances the Earth element so bright light is auspicious.  If used creatively it can enhance the crystal element making the area come alive with positive Yang Chi Energy.

One final point:  Stay focused on your goal.  Work every day towards your goal.  Your contribution is important for these enhancements to work effectively.

Next time we will look at D - Dining Room.
